*Yes, No, comes divergent opinions

There were divergent opinions in Awka yesterday when the Accord Party held its state congress at then Stargate Hotels, Awka, where the newly
elected state executive of the party was inaugurated, on the idea of
merger with one or two others parties came up.

While some members favoured the mooted idea of a merger with the
Labour Party and the Mega Progressives Peoples Party, many others
opposed the idea.

Those who opposed the merger plans said the party has all it takes to
prosecute the forthcoming governorship and council elections in the
state.

But members at the congress admitted their willing intention to adopt
Dr Ifeanyi Ubah of the Labour Party as its governorship candidate in
the Nov 16, 2013 governorship election in the state. There was also
reasonable presence of LP members and Ifeanyi Ubah Campaign
Organisation at the meeting

In his keynote address, the newly installed state chairman, Mr Bartho
Igwedibia said they had no plans to merge with any other party.

But the pioneer chairman of the party in the state who is now the
Zonal chairman, Chief Innocent Igboekwe was vehement over any attempt
to merge with another party.

In their separate presentations, the two party chiefs said that Accord
has come to state in the state, and very active, ready and willing to
work with whoever that wants to work and accommodate the views and
interest of the party.

In his remarks, the National Youth Leader Alh Suleiman Abdulrahman who
represented the national chairman said the party has restructured to
win more council, state and national assembly seats in the nation.

He urged more members to join the party as it is the most peaceful and
cohesive party in the country today to bring the desired change.

In its 7-point resolutions, the party according to Article 23 of its
Constitution adopted the deliberations of its meeting of Aug 12 and
13, 2013 which affirmed the election of the new exco led by Igwedibia
and Gideon Obi as Secretary.
