‘Secret’ Romney Tapes Expose Obama’s Pre-Debate Weaknesses

That the so-called “secret” video of Gov. Mitt Romney from May, published by Mother Jones this week, had been on YouTube for months should have had the media suspecting a plant — but they seem nose-deaf to what the supporters of the Obama campaign shovel.

In the video, Romney says in part that he will not win the 47 percent of voters Obama has locked up, claiming those are people “who are dependent upon government, who believe they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to take care of them, who believe they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.”

There are two truths in Romney’s remarks: Obama has locked up 47 percent that few argue would be swayed by Romney, and the entitlement state has ballooned, with more than 100 million people on some form of government support.

But as New York Times conservative columnist David Brooks explained well in Thurston Howell Romney: “The people who receive the disproportionate share of government spending are not big-government lovers. They are Republicans. They are senior citizens. They are white men with high school degrees.”

The video was brought to Mother Jones by none other than former President Jimmy Carter’s grandson, an opposition researcher, and it worked to Obama’s advantage by preceding an appearance on the David Letterman’s Late Show.

How this story has played out in the last few days highlights the stark contrast of media coverage between the two candidates, raising deeply concerning issues of class in America, as well as what’s at the heart of the leadership style of these two very different men.

But if you listened just to the media coverage, you’d think minds were made up and Americans have already re-elected Obama.

Yet Gallup daily tracking shows the president up by just one point — coincidentally, with 47 percent.

What’s more, USA Today/Gallup shows that Obama does not have a lock on swing states; even more confounding is that his glorified post-convention bounce fizzled.

As if there needs to be further proof of the media’s unembarrassed partiality to Obama, let’s consider weeks of hard and fast criticism from the media directed at Romney — over moves that would have gotten a pass were they made by Obama.

Endlessly, the media criticized Romney’s response to the embassy killings, but polling shows that job approval of Obama’s foreign policy took a massive hit. A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found the president’s foreign policy approval at 49 percent, down from 54 percent a month ago. NBC reported that the cross tabs were more damning among independents, dropping from 53 percent to 41 percent.

Just as initial word of the mob attacks on American diplomatic outposts began to hit the airwaves, the condemnation of Romney’s justified criticism of the president was called ““crass and tone deaf” by MSNBC’s Chuck Todd.

That was the story for days: Romney’s inappropriate response.

Never mind the four American deaths, embassies burning, mobs running amok — on the 11th anniversary of 9/11. It’s that laser focus on Romney to exclusion of all else that indicates what’s at stake: the media’s choice for president.

It was opportunistic, they screamed, for Romney to criticize the president in the midst of a foreign crisis, even though the State Department didn’t know where Ambassador Chris Stevens was at the time.

Let the president be the president, the media commanded.

And while scrutiny dogged Romney day and night, the media showed footage of the president scooting off mid-crisis to Las Vegas for a campaign fundraiser. Where was the outrage?

Then, a British journalist reported that there were warnings of the embassy attack after what’s now being considered a long, ongoing security breach.

The Independent in Great Britain continued to cover what the American media had not. On September 14, it reported that “senior officials are increasingly convinced” that the attacks had nothing to do with an online video called “Innocence of Muslims.”

It took a full 10 days before the White House called it a terrorist attack yesterday.

It’s downright galling for the media to charge Romney with being “tone deaf,” while turning a blind eye to Obama’s foreign policy weaknesses and playing along with the proud display of opportunism at the DNC, where for three days, the Democrats shamelessly exploited the military raid that led to the death of Osama bin Laden.

But that level of orgiastic display of self-aggrandizement’s different. Because, well… obviously.

And let’s not forget about the media’s attacks on class differences over Romney’s remarks on the “secret” video, continually branding them as out of touch with Americans of all income brackets.

When Romney released his tax returns yesterday, showing that he pays 14 percent in taxes and donates a praiseworthy 30 percent of his income to charity, even the New York Times had to give it a rest, but not before noting that his “$13.7 million in income puts him in the top 0.01 percent of earners, by the way.”

And yet Gallup shows Romney with as much support among the lowest-income voters as Obama has with the highest-income voters.

But disparaging the Romney’s prosperous image is fair game. The LA Times joined in the class warfare, noting that in some cases the “government-hugging freeloaders” are his “fellow millionaires.”

“Romney may want to keep that in mind when he speaks of these people. They ain’t heavy. They’re his brothers.”

Conversely, liberals applauded the president’s $4 million, $40,000-a-plate fundraiser hosted by Beyonce and Jay-Z last week. Even ABCNews joined in the adoration, reporting that Beyonce sent an email to Obama supporters saying “she’s a huge fan and will do whatever it takes to help him win in a close race.”

The Huffington Post gushed that Obama raised a record $84.7 million in August, saying he “Crushes Mitt Romney in Advertising Spending.”

But the Koch Brothers are made out as evil for hosting three fundraisers and raised $3 million total. Those fundraisers were hounded by 200 protesters, many of whom singled out the ticket price as objectionable:

Some of the 200 protesters marched down mile-long Coopers Beach toward the home in a cloud of sand, bearing banners and signs: “Your $50,000 ticket equals my child’s education,” “End corporate personhood” and “Don’t forget to tip the help.”

I’m not surprised that Occupy wasn’t there to protest the Beyonce fundraiser tickets, but where was the media to make the connection? No wonder distrust of the media has hit a new high, according to Gallup.

Romney’s not facing an easy challenge in defeating a president with a friendly press corps.

But he can be formidable, particularly if he recognizes the opportunities revealed in the last week of polling to unpack some of Obama’s greatest failings — foreign policy and America’s position as a superpower — along with the ongoing domestic concerns of the economy.

Americans get to compare these two very different candidates on the national stage with the first debate on October 3 focused on domestic policy with Jim Lehrer of KPS’ NewsHour.

POLITICO/GW poll: Obama 50, Romney 47

0

Obama leads 50 percent to 47 percent, which is within the margin of error. His 50 percent job approval rating puts him at a crucial threshold for an incumbent seeking reelection. It’s an uptick from the spring and summer, but 48 percent still disapprove.

Romney, meanwhile, finds himself sliding in the wake of two events — the choice of his running mate and the Republican national convention — that were supposed to buoy his candidacy. His unfavorable rating ticked up from 46 percent to 49 percent over the past seven weeks, as the share viewing him favorably held steady at 46 percent. Personal likability boosts the president, who is viewed favorably by 53 percent. …

Obama now ties or has an edge over Romney on who is best to handle every major issue except the federal budget and spending.

Romney has lost his edge on jobs. A month ago, he led Obama by 6 points on the question of who is best equipped to put Americans back to work. Now they’re even. Among those who say creating jobs is their top priority, Obama’s up 11 points.

A slight majority disapproves of the way Obama’s handling the economy, yet he narrowly leads Romney on who is better to manage it.

The tax numbers may be the most striking in the poll. By a small, 4-point margin, voters say they would rather have Obama – a Democratic president who has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthy – handling the tax system than Romney. Voters choose Obama over Romney on foreign policy by 9 points and pick him on “standing up for the middle class” by a 19-point margin.

As James writes, Romney’s only issue advantage is on spending, where he leads Obama by 5 points. There’s no question that the budget is a major issue in this campaign, but it may not be enough on its own to offset Obama’s lead on the broad category of “standing up for the middle class,” if Romney can’t also take back his lead on jobs.

The ravaging flood which has taken over twenty communities with a population of over 500,000 persons, destroyed virtually everything in the affected areas including, buildings, house hold properties and food crops in their farmlands.

At the Ekperi Grammar School, Ugbekpe Ekperi, there were over 60, 000 refugees from Yuluwa village, Ofukpo, Agbabu, Iguzi-Ofukpe, Udaba, Unudoboh, Udaba-Ogho, Anegette all in Etsako Central.

Crack down on ACN chieftains in Kwara state imminent – ACN

0
Gov Abdulfatah Ahmed, Kwara State

The Action Congress of Nigeria has warned of an imminent crackdown on its members in Kwara state in the aftermath of the massive defection of prominent members of the PDP and ACPN to its fold in recent times.

In a statement issued in Akure on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary Alhaji Lai Mohammed the party expressed concern over the sabre rattling and provocative statements that have been emanating from the PDP government controlled organs in the state before, during and after the defection of their former loyalists to the ACN

It has become fashionable for the PDP controlled government in Kwara State to find in the ACN a ready scape goat for its maladministration, incompetence profligacy and anti -people policies which have totally alienated the long suffering people of the State from their underperforming government, the party explained.

According to the party it is no longer a secret that Kwara state government is owing its workers several months of unpaid salaries. However in its usual penchant for looking for a scape goat for its shortcomings, the state government has perfected plans to arrest and detain ACN chieftains whenever the workers goes on strike as if the workers need to be instigated by anyone to demand their legitimate rights.

To keen watchers of Kwara State politics this will not come as a surprise as the ACN was also held responsible for the violent protest that greeted the ban of commercial motorcyclists in the state recently, and a strident call was made for the arrest of ACN chieftains when the representatives of the government were booed and pelted with missiles at the the muslim praying ground last August, the party added

The profligacy, scandalous massive deductions by the state government of funds meant for local government councils, incompetence, cronyism , and anti -people policies of the government has brought such untold hardship to the people and left the state under developed that the people are left with no choice than to leave the sinking PDP in droves and embrace ACN, the party explained.

For a government that has repeatedly proclaimed to the world that the opposition is dead in the state, the recent massive defection of its former loyalists was bound to jolt and send it to overdrive especially given the quality of the political giants that left to join the ACN such as:

Chief James Ayeni the first Executive Chairman of Irepodun Local Government of the state and a three time Commissioner in the state, the most recent tenure being under Governor Bukola Saraki himself.

Engineer Jide Usman, two term time Executive Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Council in the state the biggest local government Council in the state

Barrister Abiodun Dada former Auditor of the PDP in Ekiti Local Government Area of the State

Hon Ayo Idowu a member the Kwara State House Of Assmbly 2007-2011

Chief J. S. Adedoyin a former state director of local government and chieftaincy affairs and a grass root politician

Barrister Akinmade Yahaya Abolarin the former state legal adviser of ACPN

Alhaji Issa Raji (alias Kingibe of Kwara State) a former member of Kwara state Independent Electoral Commission

Mr Teju Titiloye former member Governing Council College of Education, Kotongora

Barrister B. A. Atolagbe former supervisory councillor Irepodun local government council of the state and former member Kwara State Scholarship Board

Olanrewaju Shuaibu arguably the most redoubtable grass root politician in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state, the party concluded.

New States: Kalu Faults Kwankwaso

5

Former Abia state governor Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu Sunday frowned upon toying with the hopes and aspirations of fellow Nigerians in the guise of politics, even as he advised Kano state governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to give the south- east a breather.

Apparently reacting to Kwankwaso’s submission that the south-east was undeserving of a new state, Kalu expressed concern that a compatriot could be so mean in his assertions.

He said, “Injustice to one is injustice to all. The south-east zone has the least number of states. Kwankwaso’s north -west got seven. I do not begrudge them. He says Kano is more populated than the former Eastern region that is questionable. I hope he knows that in the US, Wyoming with a population of less than a million is as important as California with about 30 million.”

The ex-governor posited that nothing should be spared in giving the south-east a fair deal even if it meant going into the federation called Nigeria through the back door.

“We shall keep up the struggle. When President Umaru Yar’adua died, we accepted the ‘Doctrine of necessity’. Following Chief Moshood Abiola’s death, Nigeria bent backwards for an all-Yoruba Presidential duel. General Yakubu Gowon was a Lieutenant Colonel when he became Head-of-State in 1966 ahead of his seniors who agreed to work with him, men like Brig. Babafemi Ogundipe, Commodore Edet Wey and Col. Adeyinka Adebayo. If the Senate must go under the table to balance the equation, heaven will not fall, “he added.

Kalu advised the Kano governor to liaise with one of his predecessors Arc. Kabir Gaya if he had a grouse with the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendment.

“Dr. Kwankwaso is my friend. And I know Kano people have nothing against a new south-east state. Maybe, the governor has something against certain individuals in Abuja. He could sort things out through Senator Gaya. All states in Nigeria were created by Leaders from the north. And this structural imbalance must be tackled now”, Kalu finalized.
