Less than six days after 19 members of the Adamawa State House of
Assembly issued an impeachment notice on Governor Murtala Nyako and
his deputy, Barr. James Ngilari, 13 lawmaker have expressed
willingness to withdraw their signatures.
The decision by the lawmakers to withdraw their signatures, according
to a source, was arrived after a meeting with former Vice President
Atiku Abubakar in Abuja.
“As I speak to you, I can confirm to you that 13 out of the 19
lawmakers who appended their signatures on the notice have written
withdrawing their signatures. We may have more of them doing that on
Monday if the trouble-shooting efforts of the top APC politicians in
the state scale through, everything will be brought under control,”
said the source.
Meanwhile, Ngilari returned to the country from Spain on Saturday and
met with President Goodluck Jonathan after the Sunday service held at
the Aso Villa Chapel.
The deputy Governor was one of the Christian faithful who witnessed
the investiture of Jonathan as the Grand Patron of Nigeria’s Boys’
Brigade. He later avoided the prying eyes of State House Correspondent
by going through the back door.
A source at the Villa disclosed that the Presidency might have
expressed displeasure at the manner the Adamawa state House of
Assembly was handling the issue the impeachment issue.
“The lawmakers in the state are handling the issue wrongly and giving
the impression as if the entire exercise was being scripted by Abuja.
There is every indication that they may abandon the entire process.
Atiku Abubakar and others have taken advantage of the entire process
and gone to block the impeachment process,” said the source.
As at 6pm on Sunday, Governor Murtala Nyako was yet to return to
Yola, the state capital. A source at the Yola Government House told
our correspondent that the governor was slated to arrive the state
capital on Sunday.

Abducted Chibok Girls May Be Used As Tools For Attacks If… – Expert Says
There are dangers that the 219 abducted Chibok schoolgirls may end up being indoctrinated as members of the Boko Haram sect or even help to carry out attacks if nothing is done to end their continuous stay in captivity of the insurgents, a top security source who wouldn’t want to be named said.
The security source who has some expertise on criminal psychology told LEADERSHIP Sunday in an exclusive interview that the chances are 50:50 that some of the abducted girls would by now begin to imbibe or get indoctrinated to support the cause of the Boko Haram.
The source said that there are strong argument currently being advanced within the security circle that the young girl that carried out the recent suicide bombing at a military check post in Gombe State could be one of the girls that were in captivity.
“We are faced by two dangers now; one is the fear that these girls could be killed and the other is that they could be turned into some tools by the insurgents who may begin to use them as spies or agents to execute their heinous activities,” said the source.
“Already, if what we are suspecting is anything to go by, the girl that carried out the suicide bombing that claimed her life and that of a soldier may be one of the girls that had been abducted. It is a known fact that a female suicide bomber had not been reported so far, and suddenly we begin to record young girls now carrying out suicide attacks; one would be forced to ask where did the girl emerged from”?
“Psychologically, it takes about 21 days for one to pick up a habit or drop it”, explained the source. “The danger is that these are very young and ill-exposed schoolgirls, some of them, judging from our interactions with those that had escaped, were village girls who hardly travel far out of their communities, local government or the state. Now some grown up men picked them up and kept them for over 65 days, feeding them with nice foods; probably what they had never eaten before, clothing them, and continually preach to them to see their activities as the genuine worship of God, and then perhaps making some sexual advance on them. Over time, the poor girls would begin to have a change of whatever negative thoughts they may have harboured about the insurgents and then begin to fall in love with them, and with what they stand for”.
The top security source said once the girls got so indoctrinated, there are chances that even if they are rescued, they could still harbour some affection for their captors.
“That is why government had to shelve its politics and sanction an operation that will quickly bring these girls back home, lest we are toying with possible new converts of Boko Haram that could be used to do more havoc”, said the source.
On what could be done should the girls eventually get released, he said that “the girls must be subjected to serious psychological counselling; and experts in the security circle must have to thoroughly debrief them in order to ascertain any possible trace of indoctrination especially from those that may have professed new faith other than what they practiced before they were abducted”.

Press Release: HE Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s Concession Speech
If This Is the Will of the People
Concession Speech
His Excellency
Dr. Kayode FAYEMI
Governor, Ekiti State, Nigeria
Following the
2014 Gubernatorial Elections
Protocols
In o kun o Ekiti kete.
Yesterday, Ekiti State decided. Following the gubernatorial elections held in the land of honour, Ekiti State, Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially returned the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the election.
If indeed this is the will of the Ekiti People, I stand in deference to your will. If the result of the elections is an expression of the voice of our people, we must all heedyour voice.
I have just spoken with my brother, Mr. Peter Ayodele Fayose, congratulating him on his victory. In a few hours from now, I would be meeting the Governor-elect to discuss the future of our dear state and how we would work together to institute a smooth transition programme.
It has been a hard fought election. As expected, in the course of the campaigns, there were unsavory episodes as the candidates toured the nooks and crannies of the state to sell ourselves to the people. Elections tend to be highly divisive affairs that often see brother rising against brother. Despite our diverse party affiliations, and regardless of which way we voted on Saturday, we must remember that we are all sons and daughters of Ekiti State. Ekiti is ours to build together.
On our part, over the course of the campaigns, we presented our scorecards before the people of Ekiti State. We never at any point took your support for granted. We campaigned, we canvassed and we traversed the nooks and crannies of this State. Our performance and achievements in office will remain the backdrop against which the next government and indeed future governments will be assessed. We are proud that with the support of Ekiti people, we have raised the bar of excellence in governance. In all, we gave our best, for conscience and for posterity.
Indeed a new sociology of the Ekiti people may have evolved. However, the task of understanding how the outcome of this election has defined us as a people will be that of scholars. For us as an administration and a cadre of political leaders in Ekiti State, we have fought a good fight, we have kept faith.
To members of our party, our campaign team and indeed all Ekiti people who defied the siege on our state to cast their votes for our party, I salute your exemplary courage and doggedness in the face of harassment. Thank you for staying the course. The incidences of brazen harassment, intimidation and allied infractions on fundamental humanrights, which many of you suffered in the hands of agents of the state, would be documented and communicated to the appropriate authorities, for the records.
I thank you all for listening.
May God bless the land of honour, Ekiti State, Nigeria.
May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Dr. Kayode Fayemi
Governor, Ekiti State

Adeyeye, who also saluted the people of Ekiti State for standing firmly in their rejection of the APC government, added that; “With what happened yesterday, Ekiti people have once again demonstrated to the entire world that whoever takes them for granted will be roundly rejected.”

2015: Ekiti Periscope – By Alex O. Atawa Akpodiete
They say hindsight is 20/20. That is why sometimes, it is good to get a glimpse into the future with the hope of preventing mistakes. A periscope is a very handy tool.
The Ekiti governorship election penultimate week serves as a periscope for us into 2015. In 2015 there will be governorship elections in at least 30 states and presidential election in 774 Local Government Areas. The eyes of Nigerians were on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to see how it will conduct the gubernatorial polls, just as some other Nigerians were praying that the Super Eagles will beat Bosnia-Herzegovina in the World cup or go home from Brazil.
Many observers wanted to see if we can have hitch free elections and disprove the nay Sayers who believe that “free”, “fair” and “credible” are three adjectives that should never be used to qualify elections in Nigeria as they are not in our lexicon.
The following salient ten (10) lessons will guide us in preparing for 2015:
Lesson 1:
The number of political parties must be reduced. With the recent court challenge to the power of INEC to de-list political parties, there will be a glut of political parties. There are over 20 active political parties in Nigeria, with over 12 participating in the Ekiti governorship elections. Yes, there are pretenders and there are real contenders. In reality, it was expected to be a contest involving All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), We also need independent candidates that are not sponsored by any political party to make it more robust.
Lesson 2:
We need instant results to reduce election frauds. As at 2:00am on June 22, 2014, the Ekiti governorship result has not been announced by the State Returning Officer, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University in Ado-Ekiti, Prof. Isaac Azuzu. Results should be announced instantly at from the various polling Units and wards. The results were written by hand and brought to the state collation centers. The only use of technology was that the results were entered into Excel spreadsheet and displayed as the results were read by the collating officers.
Lesson 3:
We must do away with Anachronistic use of ballot boxes and opt for Electronic voting. As I have stated before, ballot box is archaic and prone to problems. Most of the developed world, including American use electronic voting. In one voting unit in Ekiti, the results were cancelled because the total votes cast were more than the total accredited voters, meaning there was rigging somewhere.
Lesson 4:
We need to avoid negative Election campaign. Ekiti governorship election appeared to be highly charged with allegations of private jets being denied access to the state or governors’ convoys stopped by soldiers. This was not made easier by the fact that the immediate past governor, Segun Oni decamped from PDP to APC a few weeks back and was made the National Vice Chairman of the APC South. It may because he realised he will not get the governorship ticket or was aggrieved about something else because the party he joined has been jokingly nicknamed Aggrieved Peoples Congress.
Lesson 5:
Political Parties need manifestoes. During most of the campaign, it was just about keeping power in the ruling APC or returning power to PDP. There were no identifiable manifestoes that clearly distinguished one party from the other. Parties in civilized climes have manifesto or ideologies. In Nigeria, it is difficult to say this political party stands for this belief and that political party stands for that belief. That way, you can choose which party to join based on whether what the Party stands for aligns with your own personal beliefs. So, political parties and candidates must have a manifesto and the elections must be based on issues.
Lesson 6:
We need politicians who have excelled in other professions that they can fall back on if they were to lose the election so that they are not desperate and the elections do not become a “do or die.” I feel more secure with a politician with pedigree who has also proved himself in a non-political career. This may be achievable if the recommendation of the National Conference that we need part-time lawmakers is implemented because the elections will attract only those that really want to serve instead of those that want to line their pockets.
Lesson 7:
We need security in Nigeria to have elections, especially with Boko Haram now everywhere. So we cannot have elections without soldiers. In fact, INEC has already expressed concerns over 2015, saying security will be a critical issue. The problem here is that the losers will sometimes claim that the security agents were used to intimidate their voters, as they alleged in Delta Central Senatorial bye-election last year.
Lesson 8:
The Election process must be transparent, not opaque.so that we can have an election in which the losing party congratulates the winner without going to court. This will encourage parties and their candidates to accept the fact that they could lose. There is no gainsaying that the parties in the Ekiti governorship election are headed to court.
Lesson 9:
We need a better means for voter registration and maintenance of electronic voters’ register. The permanent voters cards are a step in the right direction, but not wholesome. In the Ekiti election, an INEC spokesman was on television stating unequivocally that the permanent voter’s card will be cross-checked against a list of those that actually collected their cards and voting will only be allowed if you have your permanent voter’s card.
Lesson 10:
Finally, INEC cannot and should not carry the burden of ensuring free, fair and credible election alone. It is a collective effort because Nigerians, as a whole, are part of the problem in the “do or die” syndrome.
In my analysis of the Anambra State governorship election last year, I stated, “clearly, INEC has a long way to go in conducting hitch-free elections and Nigerians, who make up the electorate, have a longer way to go, concerning how to conduct themselves in elections.
Think about it.
