LOKOJA, Nigeria — Fresh security concerns have gripped agricultural communities in Kogi State following the tragic murder of a local farmer, identified simply as Mr. Dada, by suspected bandits while working on his land.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Oshokoshoko, an agrarian settlement in the Oworo district of Lokoja Local Government Area.

A Fatal Morning Routine

According to accounts from community members, Mr. Dada had departed for his farm early Tuesday morning. Anxiety grew among family members when he failed to return at his usual hour, prompting a search team to trace his steps back to his plot.

Family members subsequently discovered his body bearing sharp-force injuries and suspected gunshot wounds.

“He went to the farm in the morning as he normally did, but when he did not return, the family became worried,” a local source recounted. “They started looking for him and eventually traced him to the farm. That was where they found him dead.”

Escalating Security Risks on the Obajana–Kabba Corridor

The location of the attack along the Obajana–Kabba corridor highlights the growing security challenges facing commuters and rural residents across Kogi State. The dense forest stretches along the transit axis have increasingly been exploited by armed criminal groups for kidnappings and ambush operations.

The killing occurred shortly after reports emerged of the abduction of nine travelers along the same transit route, intensifying fears among local farmers who rely on daily field access for their livelihoods.

Farmers in the Oworo axis express growing anxiety that the unchecked presence of armed non-state actors will jeopardize harvest activities and disrupt regional food distribution.

Calls for Enhanced Patrols and Intelligence Deployment

Residents and community leaders across Lokoja Local Government Area are appealing to the Kogi State Government and federal security agencies to increase tactical deployments and forest patrols.

While military units, including troops from the Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade, have conducted routine anti-banditry operations in the area, residents maintain that continuous intelligence gathering and sustained joint patrols are urgently required to restore confidence and protect rural agrarian communities.
