ONITSHA, Nigeria — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has issued a direct challenge to all contenders vying for the presidency in the 2027 general elections, urging them to publicly defend their records and subject their operational plans for the country to open scrutiny.
Speaking at a world press conference at his residence in Onitsha, Anambra State, the former Anambra State governor asserted that leadership requires transparency, accountability, and direct engagement with citizens facing national challenges.
Demands for Transparency and Empathy in Leadership
During his address, Obi emphasized that candidates seeking executive power must be prepared to stand before the public and justify their past accomplishments and future governance strategies:
- Public Scrutiny: Obi declared that every candidate must be willing to defend their credentials and academic background, defend their public track records, and open their vision for the country to transparent public debates.
- Presence and Empathy: He criticized leaders who govern from a distance, maintaining that true leadership demands personal presence in communities impacted by economic hardship, flood disasters, and security threats.
- Core Agenda: Outlining his campaign priorities under the NDC, Obi reaffirmed his focus on national unity, economic transition from consumption to production, and urgent security interventions to protect vulnerable communities nationwide.
2027 Electoral Landscape
Obi’s challenge comes as political parties intensify early consultations and campaign activities ahead of the upcoming election cycle. Following his affirmation as the NDC flagbearer alongside running mate Rabiu Kwankwaso, Obi is set to compete against ruling and opposition candidates, including President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
