The Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) has launched a new whistleblower initiative, tagged Operation “See It, Video It & Earn,” to enlist members of the public in the fight against dangerous driving and the growing menace of motorists driving against traffic on dual carriageways across the state.
Under the initiative, residents who witness motorists driving against traffic (popularly known as one-way) are encouraged to record clear videos of the offence, ensuring that the vehicle and its registration number are captured, and forward the footage to ARTMA via WhatsApp on 08063159282.
Announcing the launch of the initiative in a statement issued to newsmen over the week, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ARTMA, Engr. Emeka Konti-Okonkwo (Konti-Komplete) said whistleblowers whose video submissions are verified and lead to the successful impoundment of offending vehicles will receive a minimum reward of ₦20,000.
The ARTMA Boss further assured that the identities of those who provide credible information will be kept strictly confidential.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at strengthening traffic law enforcement and mobilising Ndi Anambra to play an active role in making the state’s roads safer by helping to identify motorists whose dangerous driving poses a threat to other road users.
In follow-up videos shared on Friday by the ARTMA MD, the agency confirmed that the initiative had already begun yielding positive results, following the submissions of separate videos by concerned residents showing tippers allegedly driving against traffic on dual carriageways.
ARTMA said upon receiving and confirming the videos, its operatives acted on the information, tracked down the vehicles and eventually impounded them. The videos further showed the impounded vehicles at the premises of the agency.
The agency described the development as an indication that the public participation component of Operation “See It, Video It & Earn” is already helping traffic enforcement officers to identify and apprehend offenders who may otherwise evade detection.
ARTMA further urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report motorists observed driving against traffic on dual carriageways, stressing that such conduct is dangerous and capable of causing fatal crashes and putting the lives of innocent road users at risk.
The agency also called on Ndi Anambra to advise their relatives, friends and visitors to the state against driving against traffic, warning that motorists apprehended for the offence would face the full enforcement of the law without preferential treatment.
ARTMA further appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the agency by providing clear and credible video evidence of traffic violations, explaining that the objective of the initiative is not only to apprehend offenders but also to prevent avoidable road crashes and save lives.
According to the agency, through collective vigilance and responsible reporting, the dangerous practice of one-way driving can be significantly reduced, while Anambra roads will be much safer for motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
While describing the whistleblowers as ARTMA’s everyday heroes, Engr. Konti-Okonkwo re-emphasized that there is no hiding place for one-way offenders in Anambra State.
“At ARTMA, we will never allow reckless drivers to put the lives of other road users at risk.
“Our whistleblowers are our everyday heroes. Your vigilance is helping us identify, apprehend, and prosecute one-way offenders across the state.
“Together, we are making our roads safer for everyone,” he stated.
