The eyewitness revealed that they had spotted the woman digging a shallow grave in a secluded area and burying the live two-week-old infant, unaware that her actions were being observed.

Community Subdued by Grief and Horror

The revelation instantly turned the neighborhood’s initial sympathy into pure rage, drawing a massive crowd to the scene of the crime.

Local youths and elders quickly moved to the designated site, where they exhumed the body of the infant, confirming the tragic reality that the child had been suffocated beneath the earth. The shocking nature of the crime has left residents weeping openly on the streets, with many taking to social media to express absolute heartbreak over the rising wave of horrific domestic atrocities hitting the country.

To carry a child for nine months, give birth safely, and then bury that innocent baby alive while lying about a kidnapping is a level of evil that is difficult to comprehend, a community leader in Ughelli stated.

Security Forces Rescue Suspect from Lynch Mob

The situation rapidly turned volatile as an angry mob formed around the suspect’s residence, demanding immediate street justice.

The tension was critical until a rapid-response team from the Delta State Police Command arrived at the scene. The security forces fought back the aggressive crowd, cordoned off the area, and managed to safely extract the suspect before she could be lynched by the furious youths.

The woman was taken into tight administrative custody at the divisional headquarters, where she is currently undergoing intense interrogation to determine the psychological or domestic motives behind the horrific act.

A Ticking Mental and Economic Crisis

Sociologists and human rights advocates tracking the incident warn that the tragedy highlights a severe, unaddressed breakdown in community mental health structures and social welfare systems across rural Nigeria.

While the law must take its full course for murder, experts note that extreme post-partum depression, severe economic desperation, and a lack of counseling services frequently drive unstable individuals into committing unimaginable atrocities against their own children.

The police command has urged the residents of Ekuigbo to remain calm and allow the standard legal process to take its course, assuring the public that the suspect will be swiftly arraigned in a conventional court of law on charges of murder once preliminary investigations are fully concluded.
