ABUJA, NIGERIA — A volatile confrontation unfolded at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministry secretariat on Tuesday morning as human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore launched a scathing, direct attack on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over his handling of the capital’s escalating security crisis.

Standing directly outside the minister’s headquarters, Sowore publicly branded Wike a “foolish man” and accused him of profound hypocrisy after the minister warned Nigerians to stop politicizing the wave of mass abductions targeting schools.

The Confrontation at the Ministry Gates

The dramatic scene unfolded just as members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) FCT Chapter gathered for an emergency demonstration to protest the continued captivity of local students and educators held in remote terrorist camps.

Sowore, joining the frustrated teachers, did not hold back his anger when addressing Wike’s recent public statements on national television:

“He’s a foolish man, I’m saying that in front of his office,” Sowore declared passionately to reporters at the scene. “He’s lucky I didn’t meet him here when he was saying that rubbish. He said we should not politicize insecurity when himself is a product of the politics of insecurity.”

The activist argued that it is impossible to separate politics from the security architecture when governance failures, budgetary diversions, and political appointments directly shape the vulnerability of vulnerable border communities.

Teachers Force Crisis Into the Spotlight

Before the heated exchange at the secretariat, the NUT leadership informed activists that the security situation in the outer council areas of the FCT had reached an unbearable breaking point.

The immediate catalyst for Tuesday’s protest is the prolonged captivity of several students and teachers who were violently snatched from their classrooms and remain trapped in terrorist enclaves. The teachers expressed deep fury that while the minister frequently organizes high-profile political events and infrastructure commissions, the peripheral schools in the territory remain completely soft targets for bandit syndicates.

“Our children are sleeping in forests under the rain while politicians sit in fortified offices telling us to keep quiet and not ‘politicize’ our pain,” one protesting educator remarked.

Wike’s Communication Policy Under Severe Fire

Minister Wike has consistently maintained that public alarm and aggressive media commentary only serve to embolden kidnappers and create unnecessary panic within the capital city. His aides have previously claimed that the administration is working closely with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to deploy covert countermeasures.

However, Sowore’s direct confrontation highlights a growing, militant impatience among civil society groups in Abuja. Critics point out that the administration’s defensive stance is increasingly viewed by the public as insensitive to the psychological trauma of affected families.

Security personnel at the FCT Ministry barricaded the main entrance during the outburst, preventing the protest from spilling into the main administrative blocks. As of Tuesday afternoon, the FCT Minister’s office has declined to issue an official response to Sowore’s personal insults or the teachers’ specific demands for localized military protection at high-risk schools.
