KANO — The political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections has witnessed a major shift as the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) governorship candidate, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, officially announced Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate.

Gwarzo, the current Deputy Governor of Kano State, made the high-profile announcement through a statement released on his official social media handle.

“It is with profound gratitude that I today announce Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso as my running mate for the 2027 gubernatorial election under our great party, the NDC,” Gwarzo stated, expressing optimism for the party’s success. “I wish our party victory in the upcoming 2027 general elections.”

A Strategic Alliance

The choice of Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso—the son of the influential political heavyweight and former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso—is seen by analysts as a calculated move to consolidate the formidable Kwankwasiyya political structure within the state.

Mustapha Kwankwaso currently serves as the Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sport, a position that has kept him in close alignment with youth demographics and grassroots mobilization.

Shaping the 2027 Race

The ticket formally cements the NDC’s executive blueprint to retain control of Nigeria’s most populous northern commercial nerve center. By pairing Gwarzo’s administrative experience with the deep political lineage and youth appeal of the Kwankwaso name, the party aims to mount a formidable campaign against rival political factions in the state.
