KANO, NIGERIA — A prominent Northern Islamic scholar has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu, stating that the North is prepared to unite and throw its massive voting bloc behind Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election if the current administration continues to frustrate the opposition and the Nigerian populace.
The statement highlights growing dissatisfaction within traditional Northern power bases over the federal government’s economic policies and anti-opposition maneuvers.
The Threat of a Unified Northern Shift
The cleric criticized the presidency’s handling of national affairs, pointing out that economic hardship, rising inflation, and persistent insecurity have hit the Northern region acutely. He warned that political high-handedness could backfire on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“If President Tinubu continues to frustrate the opposition and the Nigerian people, we in the North will unite and massively support Peter Obi in 2027,” the scholar declared.
The warning strikes at the core of the APC’s electoral math, which historically relies on massive voter turnout in the North-West and North-East geopolitical zones to secure the presidency.
Why Peter Obi is Gaining Traction in the North
The scholar’s open endorsement of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, represents a significant shift in political alignment. Observers note that Obi’s policy narrative is beginning to resonate beyond his traditional southern base for several reasons:
- The “North is Our New Oil” Blueprint: Obi’s consistent message that Nigeria’s economic salvation lies in cultivating the vast, unutilized agricultural lands of the North to drive production and export is gaining traction among agrarian communities.
- Socio-Economic Desperation: With the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira leading to skyrocketing costs of fertilizer, food items, and basic electricity, many Northern voters feel alienated by the current administration’s macro-economic reforms.
Mounting Pressure on the Ruling Party
This warning coincides with ongoing realignment talks among major opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who are exploring coalitions to challenge the APC in 2027.
By threatening a unified shift to Obi, Northern religious and opinion leaders are signaling that regional, ethnic, and religious sentiments may take a back seat to sheer economic survival and administrative competence in the next general election. The presidency has yet to officially respond to the scholar’s remarks, maintaining instead that its current fiscal policies will yield long-term prosperity for all regions.
