WASHINGTON — Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) issued a blistering condemnation of U.S. and Israeli military policy on March 27, 2026, as the conflict with Iran enters a second month of high-stakes escalation.

In a statement posted to his official X account, the Vermont senator questioned the strategic foundation of the ongoing war, which began in late February with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure.

“A Moral Disaster”

Sanders’ post, which quickly went viral, presented a series of rhetorical questions challenging the recurring nature of the “Iran threat” and the mounting human cost:

“How many times can we ‘obliterate’ Iran’s nuclear capabilities? How many years will Iran be ‘weeks away’ from attacking the U.S.?”

The Senator’s remarks highlight a growing divide in Washington as the conflict, dubbed by some as “Netanyahu’s war,” continues to draw in American resources. Sanders has been a vocal critic of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, recently labeling him an “extremist” and accusing him of dragging President Trump into a “horrific and unpopular” campaign to serve his own political interests.

Mounting Costs and Casualties

The Senator’s demand to “END THIS WAR NOW” comes as reports from the region indicate a worsening humanitarian situation:

  • Casualties: In just the first 12 days of the campaign, over 1,200 Iranian civilians were reported killed, alongside 13 U.S. service members.
  • Displacement: Millions are estimated to be displaced within Iran and Lebanon as strikes expand.
  • Financial Toll: Sanders cited expenditures exceeding $16.5 billion in less than two weeks, fueling his criticism of the “military-industrial complex” while Americans struggle with domestic costs like housing and healthcare.

Legislative Push

Beyond social media, Sanders has introduced the “No War Against Iran Act” (S.2087), a piece of legislation aimed at prohibiting federal funds for military action against Iran without explicit congressional authorization. He is joined by several progressive colleagues, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chris Van Hollen, who argue the current campaign violates international law and risks a “full-blown regional war”.

The White House and Prime Minister Netanyahu have dismissed these criticisms. Netanyahu recently called allegations that he influenced American decision-making “ridiculous,” asserting that the strikes are a necessary defense against a “brutal and authoritarian” regime.

As the conflict shows no signs of abating, Sanders continues to push for a diplomatic resolution, warning that “U.S. complicity in this carnage is a moral disaster”.
