ABUJA – Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has dropped a political nuclear bomb on the Presidency, accusing President Bola Tinubu of systematically and illegally siphoning ₦100 billion every month from the Federation Account.

In a scathing indictment of the administration’s fiscal discipline, El-Rufai declared that the President’s actions are not just unconstitutional but constitute a clear “impeachable offence” that the National Assembly cannot afford to ignore.

The 1.5 Trillion Naira Hole?
According to El-Rufai, these unauthorized deductions have been running like clockwork for the past 15 months, allegedly bypassing the constitutional requirement for legislative approval. He argued that the Federation Account—which belongs to the Federal, State, and Local governments—is being treated as a private “slush fund” by the current administration.

“Every month, President Bola Tinubu deducts ₦100B from the Federation account,” El-Rufai stated during a high-stakes interview. “This is unconstitutional and an impeachable offence. Where is this money going while Nigerians are starving?”

A “Cabal” vs. The Constitution
The former governor’s outburst adds a massive layer of credibility to the claims made by the ADC’s Bolaji Abdullahi, who recently accused “criminal goons” within the government of lawlessness and impunity. El-Rufai, who has recently aligned himself with the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), suggests that the administration is preparing for 2027 by building a massive war chest through these illegal deductions.

The timing couldn’t be worse for the APC. With the party already under fire for spending ₦11 billion on a single convention and the President telling Jos victims there is “no money in millions” for their relief, El-Rufai’s ₦100 billion-a-month allegation is a public relations nightmare.

The Security Question
El-Rufai also took a swipe at the government’s failure to secure the nation despite the alleged massive spending. He questioned why bandits are still “live-streaming on TikTok” and terrorists are massacring citizens in Jos if ₦100 billion is being pulled every month for “security and interventions.”

“You have no light at the airport for the President, but you have ₦100 billion to deduct every month?” mocked one opposition lawmaker aligned with the Peter Obi-APP coalition talks.

Presidency Under Pressure
While the Presidency has yet to issue a formal rebuttal to El-Rufai’s specific figures, the “impeachment” word is now officially on the table in Abuja. As the ADC prepares to defy INEC and proceed with its congresses on April 9, and Governor Bala Mohammed warns of “Gestapo” tactics, the ₦100 billion scandal may be the spark that turns a political disagreement into a full-blown constitutional crisis.

For Nasir El-Rufai, the man once considered a key architect of the APC, the bridge has been completely burnt. The question now is: will the National Assembly find the courage to investigate, or will the “Elephant” in the room continue to grow?
