BANJUL, The Gambia — In a rare and symbolic show of cross-border admiration, the former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has been honored with the Official Key to the City of Banjul.
The high-profile recognition took place during a formal ceremony in the Gambian capital, where Obi was also conferred with a prestigious chieftaincy title. The dual honors serve as a testament to his growing influence as a statesman across the African continent.
The Key to the City, typically reserved for visiting heads of state or individuals who have made extraordinary global contributions, was presented by city officials who praised Obi’s commitment to “frugality, integrity, and visionary leadership.”
Following the civic reception, Obi was ushered into a traditional ceremony where he received his new title. Local leaders noted that the recognition was not just for his political journey in Nigeria, but for his consistent advocacy for good governance and youth empowerment across Africa.
“This is not just an honor for me, but a reminder that the world is watching what we do in our corner of the continent,” Obi remarked while receiving the accolades. “I am deeply humbled by the warmth of the Gambian people and their belief in a New Africa.”
The event has since gone viral on social media, with supporters—popularly known as “Obidients”—celebrating the honors as proof of their leader’s international standing. Critics, however, have remained divided, with some questioning the timing of such foreign accolades while domestic political battles continue to simmer.
The recognition in Banjul follows a series of international speaking engagements where Obi has continued to push for a shift from “consumption to production” as the only viable path for African development.
