The traditional ruler of Okuta, Oba Simeon Olanipekun, has regained his freedom after his family paid a total of N32 million in ransom to his abductors. The monarch, who was kidnapped on December 31, 2025, was released on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
According to sources, Oba Olanipekun’s son, Olaolu, was initially released by the kidnappers to help raise funds for the ransom. The community contributed an initial amount, while the family added an extra N12 million to complete the payment. Two fully charged power banks were also handed over to the kidnappers as part of the conditions for the monarch’s release
The kidnappers had initially demanded N20 million, which was paid, securing Olaolu’s release. However, Oba Olanipekun remained in captivity until the additional N12 million was paid.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the monarch’s release but denied knowledge of any ransom payment, attributing the success to joint security operations in the area
Oba Olanipekun is said to be receiving medical attention for physical and psychological trauma sustained during his captivity
