Thunder in Paradise: Barr. Agbasiere Hosts Epic Tennis Championship in Milatel

It was four days of memorable tennis at Milatel Hotel and Suites, Awka, the Anambra State capital. The auspicious event was the 2026 Annual Tennis Championships sponsored by the quintessential philanthropist, Barrister Tony Agbasiere aka Celebrity Barrister. Tennis players from the South-East and South-South States slugged it out, showcasing exceptional talents and passion for the game. Defying the sweltering heat of the January sun, the 34 contestants from far and near put in scintillating performances at the Men’s Singles and Mixed-Doubles rounds.

The event featured contestants in the Singles and Mixed-Doubles categories. Professional and academy players flocked in from various parts of the country and Africa to compete. It was a festival of beautiful tennis. Spectators enjoyed exceptional tennis entertainment.

In the main draws for the men’s singles, raw talents from the South East clashed. The thrill rose to a crescendo in the Men’s Singles semis with Iloputa Ikechukwu vs Okonkwo Ikenna. Ikenna easily dusted off Ikechukwu to reach the finals. Oparaoji Uche saw off Michael Chima and reached the finals. In the end, Okonkwo Ikenna displaced Oparaoji Uche to win.

In the Mixed-Doubles, Iloputa Ikechukwu and Ekpeyong Ruth won, displaying excellent sportsmanship.

The competition lived up to its billing as one of the best tournaments in West Africa. The main organizer, Mr Albert Anele, was professional. Kudos to him!

The sponsor, Barr Tony Agbasiere, has done a lot for Nigerian youths through tennis. He’s snatched kids off the streets, giving them direction and purpose. Through sports, he’s elevating kids and their families out of poverty.

This year’s total prize was ₦2.5 million. Barr Agbasiere was on ground, motivating players and giving out sports kits. He gave and gave, plastering smiles on faces.

Speaking with pressmen, Chief Christian Ezenwoke (Ochili Nise) praised the players’ professionalism. He applauded them for giving their best from January 1st-4th, 2025. He also gave cash gifts to players, encouraging them.

The event drew tennis veterans, Anambra State Sports Commission reps, families, dignitaries, and game lovers to Awka. Many praised Barr Tony Agbasiere for consistently sponsoring this tournament, bringing players to his Anambra homeland.
