The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to investigate the defection of 17 Rivers State House of Assembly members, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, amidst concerns they may not hold the party’s membership card. The lawmakers announced their defection to the APC on December 5, 2025, citing divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A top APC source revealed that national officers are verifying the lawmakers’ claims, seeking proof of registration and membership cards. The source questioned why the lawmakers didn’t display their membership cards during the public announcement, saying, “On your mandate we shall stand” isn’t enough; they need the actual card.

The lawmakers involved include Amaewhule, Dumle Maol, Major Jack, and others. APC’s Rivers State Chairman, Tony Okocha, had earlier confirmed their defection, stating they fulfilled constitutional requirements. However, doubts persist, with some speculating the move is a ploy to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
