The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing gross misconduct. During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, Majority Leader Major Jack read out the notice of allegations against Fubara, signed by 26 assembly members ¹.
The allegations include reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds, obstruction of the House of Assembly, and unauthorized appointments. Amaewhule stated that the notice will be served to Fubara within the next seven days.
Deputy Majority Leader Linda Stewart also read out allegations against Odu, including seeking budgetary approval from an unauthorized group and withholding salaries of assembly members and staff ¹ ².
The move is seen as a significant escalation of the ongoing power struggle between Fubara and the assembly, which has been at odds over budgetary and governance issues.
