The Anambra State Government has issued a stern warning to masquerade groups, threatening to ban or prosecute those engaging in violent and unruly behavior, particularly during traditional festivals. This follows recent incidents of public assault and harassment, including a viral video showing a masquerade attacking innocent citizens in Awgbu community, Orumba South Local Government Area.
Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, emphasized that masquerade performances must be restricted to designated areas and should not obstruct traffic, harass motorists, or embarrass the public. He reminded law enforcement agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders to ensure compliance with government directives.
The warning comes after a 28-year-old man, Ifesinachi Ezeolu, was identified as the individual behind a violent masquerade that terrorized Awgbu residents. Some masquerades and their sponsors have already been arrested and are facing prosecution.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is determined to promote cultural heritage while ensuring public safety. The government has invested in CCTV cameras and AI surveillance to track down criminals, and residents can report suspicious activities via the 511 call center.
This move aims to restore peace and order, making Anambra a safe and welcoming place for residents and tourists alike.
