Authorities have confirmed the arrest of one Ozioma Okonkwo, a native of Imo State residing in Enugu, for allegedly def!ling his two biological daughters, aged two and five respectively. The suspect was apprehended, following a distress report from a concerned citizen who alerted authorities to the horrific act.
According to a statement issued by the Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Okonkwo is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
The ministry disclosed that the two victims have been moved to a government-approved shelter, where they are receiving medical treatment and psychosocial support. Their mother, who is said to be deeply traumatized by the incident, is also said to be undergoing therapy under the Ministry’s supervision.
The statement, which condemned the act as “a heart-wrenching and unacceptable crime against innocence,” reaffirmed the state government’s zero-tolerance policy for s3xual and gender-based vi0lence.
It also commended the Nigeria Police Force for their swift response, which led to the suspect’s prompt arrest. The Ministry assured that the government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, remains steadfast in its commitment to protect every child and ensure that perpetrators of such crimes face the full weight of the law.
The Enugu State Government also expressed appreciation to vigilant citizens for raising the alarm and for their cooperation that led to the arrest of the suspect, while also encouraging them to sustain the community involvement in safeguarding the rights and dignity of women and children.
This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that the case adds to the growing call for stricter punishment against s3xual offenders, especially given a similar case in 2022 where a Lagos man, Michael Ogbar, was sentenced to triple life imprisonment for def!ling his three daughters aged 10, 20, and 24 respectively.
