Students of the eight tertiary institutions in Anambra state have resolved to shut down business activities in the area should the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC fails to extend the Continus Voter Registration exercise by ten days.

The students who are drawn from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Chukwuemaka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Igbariam/ Uli, Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe, Federal Polytechnic Oko , College of Education Technical Umunze, Anambra state Polytechnic Mgbakwu College of Health Technology Obosi and the Metalogical Institute Onitsha accused the Electoral Commission of plotting to disenfranchise them from voting in the November 8th gubernatorial election in the area.

They lamented that since the commencement of the Continus Voter Registration exercise no staff of INEC had visited their school while some schools were provided with one registration machine to serve both the school and the Communities housing those instructions.

According to the Chairman National Association of Nigerian Students NANS Comerade Okpala Mathew Okoye and Secretary Comerade Okereke Uchechukwu John ;

“INEC has deliberately failed to deploy enough registration officials and machines to any tertiary institution in Anambra state”

“This coordinated neglect we reliably gathered is politically motivated enabled by the Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner REC who has failed in her duty and lacks the integrity to hold such sensitive position ”

“We are also aware that in states like Edo, Ondo and Osun , INEC granted up to twenty days for voter registration, yet Anambra state was given only ten days ”

“If our demands are not met within forty eight hours we will launc a massive statewide protest shutting down major roads and INEC offices until our voices are heard because we will not be silent while our democratic rights are stolen” it stated .

The students union leaders of the respective institutions also presented situation reports on the voter registration lamenting that even communities housing the schools are also affected.

According to Comerade Angus Solomon Kelechi Federal College of Education Technical Umunze;

“They have not even come to my own school for once and I met the woman in charge of Orumba South local government INEC she continued telling me that they will come”

“Even if they give us additional three days it cannot accommodate the Communities let alone coming to my school there by my students would be dis emphasized”

Comerade Christian Ugochukwu SUJ President of Anambra Polytechnic Mgbakwu stated that;

“It is also happing in my own school since the beginning of the Voter Registration I can say that the entire Community of Mgbakwu it is only one machine for the town talk more of the students population”

“These three days cannot finish one hostel let alone the entire school so let them come and register us and let us perform our civil responsibilities ”

“They should bring more machines and then extend it to about ten days”

“It is only one machine in Unizik one in other schools so we plead and failure to do this we shall carry out a protest blocking the federal roads from Onitsha to Asaba Enugu Awka express way”

Nwabueze Victor SUG President of Metalogical Institute Onitsha observed that;

“Since the registration started no INEC official had visited mu school or the Community close to my school”

“As it stands now , students in my school have not been registered which is very bad and we expect the federal government would come to our aid or we do the needful”

Comerade Asangwu Charles Tobechukwu of the College of Health Technology Obosi narrated that ;

“We have not seen any INEC official in our Collage and we don’t need to beg for it because it is our right and they should extend the deadline by at least ten days “he said.
