Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has taken a swipe at ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over his recent comments faulting President Bola Tinubu’s fiscal policies, particularly alleged deductions from federal allocations.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Sani described El-Rufai’s criticism as hypocritical, accusing him of overseeing the alleged diversion of local government funds during his eight-year tenure as governor without facing scrutiny.

“Is this not the same El-Rufai who allegedly tampered with LG funds consistently during his time as governor? How come no one held him accountable then?” Sani asked, echoing sentiments widely expressed on social media.

During El-Rufai’s time in office, several local government chairmen reportedly raised concerns over irregular remittances and lack of financial autonomy. However, the Kaduna State House of Assembly failed to initiate any formal probe or impeachment proceedings.

El-Rufai recently slammed Tinubu’s administration for its economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and deductions from statutory allocations, arguing that the policies have worsened economic hardship.

His remarks have sparked fresh debate, with critics questioning his moral authority to speak on fiscal accountability, given his own administration’s record.

Analysts say the exchange highlights a familiar pattern in Nigerian politics, where former officeholders attempt to recast themselves as public advocates while dodging their own legacies.

As reactions continue to trail the controversy, civil society groups are renewing calls for transparency and equal accountability across all levels of government, past and present.
