In the wake of its decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a strategic step toward unity by meeting with former Anambra State governor and prominent political figure, Mr. Peter Obi.
The meeting, held in Abuja, was spearheaded by key members of the PDP Reconciliation Committee Dr. Babangida Aliyu and Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo as part of ongoing efforts to mend internal rifts and consolidate support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A source familiar with the discussion described the engagement as “cordial and forward-looking,” with Mr. Obi reportedly emphasizing the importance of national cohesion, equity, and credible leadership. Although he has remained politically independent in recent months, the meeting has sparked speculation about potential alliances or renewed collaboration with PDP.
A member of the reconciliation team stated, “We are reaching out to all stakeholders who share our vision for a stronger and united Nigeria. Mr. Obi is an important voice in that conversation.”
The PDP’s zoning decision favoring the Sout has been viewed as a calculated move to realign its political base and address longstanding calls for rotational leadership. Party insiders say further engagements with key regional leaders and former presidential contenders are underway.
As the political atmosphere begins to intensify in anticipation of the 2027 polls, the PDP’s reconciliation efforts may prove crucial in building a formidable opposition and shaping the narrative around national development and power balance.
