In a shocking development that has sent ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, Chief Jude Ezenwafor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra State election, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Abuja.
The incident occurred in the Wuse 2 district as Ezenwafor was returning home from a scheduled appointment. Eyewitnesses report that unknown gunmen accosted the candidate and opened fire, injuring him and two others who were accompanying him at the time.
Ezenwafor is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Abuja, where doctors are preparing to perform surgery to remove bullets lodged in his body. Speaking from his hospital bed, the candidate described the ordeal as “life-threatening” and expressed gratitude for surviving the attack.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility. Security agencies have launched a full-scale investigation to identify the perpetrators and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The PDP has yet to issue an official statement, but party insiders have expressed deep concern over the rising threats to political figures ahead of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.
Chief Ezenwafor, a prominent real estate developer and unopposed PDP nominee, has campaigned on a platform of economic reform, infrastructure development, and enhanced security. His supporters have called for swift justice and increased protection for candidates participating in the electoral process.
This attack underscores growing anxieties about political violence in Nigeria and raises urgent questions about the safety of democratic actors in the lead-up to critical elections.
