A cloud of sorrow has descended on Amanuke community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, following the death of Mr. Samuel Agunwa Odogwu, father of the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD.

Comrade Odogwu confirmed the passing of his father in a statement issued on Friday, June 20, 2025, in which he also expressed gratitude to God for the life and legacies of his late father.

According to him, the octogenarian passed on earlier in the day, marking the end of a life he described with deep reverence and gratitude to God. While announcing the sad news, he urged the public to keep his family in their prayers as they prepare to lay their patriarch to eternal rest.

“It’s true my Dad has said the final Goodbye! My dad is gone. He has gone to be with His Creator. He passed on earlier today. We are grateful to God for His mercies upon him. Remember us in your prayers as we plan to lay his body to eternal rest,” the NUJ Chairman stated.

Late Mr. Samuel Agunwa Odogwu was not only a respected elder in Amanuke but also a figure known for his values, humility, and legacy of uprightness — virtues which his children have carried on.

His transition has triggered an outpouring of grief and condolence messages from colleagues, friends, government officials, and well-wishers, especially within the media and political circles in Anambra and beyond, who have continued to commiserate with the bereaved family.

It would be recalled that in December 2023, the quiet town of Amanuke came alive with pomp and pageantry as the Odogwu family celebrated a unique triple event, which include the 80th birthday of the deceased; the 67th birthday of his wife, Queen Elizabeth Ijeoma Odogwu; and their 47th wedding anniversary.

The memorable occasion was a grand celebration that drew dignitaries, including top media executives, government functionaries, religious leaders, traditional rulers, friends, and associates, with a Thanksgiving Service held at the St. Faith Cathedral, Awka, and a reception at the Central School, Amanuke.

Described by many as a peaceful man and an embodiment of dignity, late Mr. Odogwu’s life and legacies remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.

Further details regarding his funeral rites are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
