The Imo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has suspended the state Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel Chinonso Alozie.
Alozie was slammed with suspension to pave way for proper investigation into the alleged sale or lease of a bus donated to the chapel by the Imo State Government.
The union announced Alozie’s suspension in a letter dated April 26, 2025 and signed by the Council’s chairman Ifeanyi Nwanguma.
The letter copied to the zonal and national leaderships of the Union disclosed that the investigation and suspension are geared towards redeeming the image of the union.
The council further revealed that its Ethics and Disciplinary Committee will investigate whether the bus was sold or leased or is on hire purchase to Ekeson Motors.
The committee will also find out Alozie’s level of involvement or that of any other member of the chapel in the deal.
The council equally directed the Vice Chairman of the chapel, Collins Osuji to take over the leadership of the chapel in acting capacity.
Alozie a correspondent of Vanguard Newspaper was elected Chairman of Correspondents’ Chapel in the state in 2024. Shortly after, the state Government donated an air-conditioned bus to the chapel.
Our correspondent learnt that the chapel unable to fuel and maintain the bus decided to lease the bus to Ekeson Motors.
Alozie was arrested by police personnel about one month ago at a wedding reception of a member of the chapel and kept in police gulag since then.
Recall that Alozie won the ‘Investigative Journalist’ of The Year award in the 2023 edition of the Governor Hope Uzodimma Media Excellence (GHUME) awards.
The award is yet to be conferred on him.
