In a political development that could reshape Akwa Ibom’s political landscape, Governor Umo Eno has publicly hinted at an imminent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform on which he was elected governor in 2023.
Governor Eno made the revelation during a media briefing at the Government House in Uyo on Tuesday, describing the decision as a “necessary realignment with the aspirations of the people of Akwa Ibom and the evolving national political structure.”
“I have given this a lot of thought. The time has come for me to take a decisive step that aligns with the broader interests of our people,” Eno stated. “My defection from the PDP is imminent. This is about service, progress, and a shared vision for the future.”
Though the governor did not officially declare his new political destination, sources close to the administration suggest he may be leaning towards the All Progressives Congress (APC) or a new coalition being floated by some governors and influential political figures.
Governor Eno, a former clergy and entrepreneur, came into office under the PDP banner with strong backing from his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel. His administration has focused on rural development, entrepreneurship, and agricultural revitalization.
Political analysts say Eno’s possible defection could trigger a chain reaction in the state’s political structure and affect the PDP’s dominance in Akwa Ibom, a state it has held since 1999.
The PDP leadership in Akwa Ibom has yet to officially respond to the governor’s statement. Meanwhile, speculation is rife that internal party disagreements and a changing political tide at the national level may have contributed to Eno’s decision.
As the nation awaits his formal announcement, stakeholders across party lines are watching closely, aware that the governor’s next move could have far-reaching implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.
