In a major political shift that could significantly alter the dynamics of Delta State politics and the national landscape, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement came during a press conference held at the Government House in Asaba earlier today, where Governor Oborevwori addressed a crowd of political allies, journalists, and supporters. Flanked by key APC leaders from the national and state levels, the governor cited “the need for greater alignment with federal priorities and the desire to accelerate development in Delta State” as core reasons behind his decision.
“After wide consultations with my family, political associates, and constituents, I have made the bold decision to join the All Progressives Congress. This move is rooted in my firm belief that Delta State stands to benefit more from being fully aligned with the leadership at the center,” Oborevwori stated.
The governor, who assumed office in May 2023 under the PDP platform, has been a prominent figure in Delta politics and was known for his loyalty to the party. His sudden defection comes as a surprise to many observers and has already sparked a wave of reactions across the political spectrum.
Sources close to the state administration revealed that several commissioners and aides are expected to follow Oborevwori into the APC in the coming days, signaling a potential realignment of power within the Delta State House of Assembly.
Reacting to the news, PDP Northern Minority Consultative Forum spokesperson Mr Jalo Enock described the move as “disappointing” but emphasized that the party remains strong and united. “Governor Oborevwori has made his choice, but the PDP remains the party of the people. We will continue to serve Nigerians with integrity and vision,” he said.
Meanwhile, the APC national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, welcomed the governor into the party, praising his leadership and expressing confidence in APC’s growing strength across the South-South region.
Political analysts believe this defection could set off a ripple effect, encouraging other key figures in the South-South to reconsider their political affiliations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As the political dust settles, all eyes are on the Delta State government to see how this transition will affect ongoing projects, governance, and the 2027 electoral roadmap.
