In a significant move aimed at enhancing the country’s defense capabilities, the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, today formally handed over an AW139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). The state-of-the-art helicopter, which is designed for a variety of military and search-and-rescue operations, is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening national security efforts.
The formal handover ceremony, which took place at the Air Force Base in Port Harcourt, was attended by senior military officials, government representatives, and key stakeholders from the aviation and defense sectors. Governor Fubara, while presenting the helicopter to the NAF, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between state and national security agencies to ensure the safety and stability of the nation.
“We are committed to supporting the Nigerian Air Force in its ongoing efforts to safeguard our borders, protect our citizens, and respond swiftly to emerging security challenges,” Governor Fubara said during his address. “This gesture reflects our resolve to contribute to the national security framework, as the safety of our people is paramount.”
The AW139 helicopter, a versatile aircraft known for its advanced capabilities in both military and civilian contexts, will significantly enhance the operational reach of the Nigerian Air Force. It is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation systems, advanced surveillance technology, and the ability to execute various missions including combat, rescue operations, and logistical support.
The Nigerian Air Force’s Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Muhammad S. D. Abubakar, who was present at the ceremony, expressed profound gratitude to the Rivers State Government for the donation. He noted that the acquisition of such high-quality equipment would bolster the NAF’s ability to address internal and external security threats, particularly in the face of ongoing challenges posed by insurgents and bandits across various regions of the country.
“This helicopter will significantly boost the operational capacity of the Nigerian Air Force, enabling us to be more responsive to security needs and to protect the lives of Nigerians across the nation,” Air Marshal Abubakar said.
The helicopter handover also marks a deepening collaboration between the federal and state governments in advancing security initiatives. Governor Fubara’s administration has long been committed to ensuring the protection of Rivers State and contributing to national defense efforts.
As part of the state’s ongoing contributions to national security, Fubara emphasized that this gesture is only one part of broader efforts to improve security infrastructure and collaboration with security agencies across the country.
The donation comes at a time when the Nigerian military is intensifying efforts to combat insurgency and other forms of criminal activity that have threatened national peace and stability in recent years.
With this new addition to the Nigerian Air Force’s fleet, it is expected that security operations, particularly in the Niger Delta and other vulnerable areas, will see marked improvements.
The handover of the AW139 helicopter is a demonstration of Governor Fubara’s commitment to the safety and well-being of not only Rivers State but the entire nation, reaffirming the crucial role of state governments in supporting national defense strategies.
