In a significant move, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has directed the Heads of Local Government Administrations (HLGAs) to immediately assume control of all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state. This directive comes in the wake of the recent suspension of local government elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), which had been slated to take place earlier.
The governor’s order mandates that the appointed HLGAs oversee the day-to-day administration of the LGAs, pending the organization and conduct of fresh elections by RSIEC. This decision is part of the state’s effort to ensure continuity in governance and service delivery at the local government level.
In a statement issued by the governor’s office, Fubara emphasized that the appointment of HLGAs is a temporary measure meant to safeguard the interests of the people and maintain administrative stability across the local councils. The statement further clarified that the state government would work closely with RSIEC to expedite preparations for the new elections, which will be conducted as soon as feasible.
The directive has sparked a wave of reactions, with some political analysts expressing concerns over the potential implications for local democratic processes. However, Governor Fubara assured that the move is in the best interest of the state, aimed at avoiding a governance vacuum and ensuring that the people of Rivers State continue to benefit from essential local services.
Political leaders and stakeholders in the state have also called for transparency and fairness in the forthcoming elections to ensure that the people’s voices are heard in the choice of their local representatives.
As the situation develops, attention will now shift to the readiness of RSIEC to organize the much-anticipated fresh elections and the possible impact of the governor’s directive on the political landscape of Rivers State.
