Imo Assembly Amends House Rules For First Timer To Emerge As Speaker, – Recalls Suspended Members After 18 months

The Imo State House of Assembly has recalled, Former Deputy Speaker of Imo House of Assembly, Hon. Okey Onyekanma, and Hon. Ekene Nnodimele, a lawmaker representing Orlu state constituency, after it suspended them for 18 months .

Lawmakers were recalled during plenary on Thursday.

The decision to recall the suspended lawmakers was based on the report of an ad-hoc committee headed by the majority leader and member representing Owerri west state constituency, Hon. Onyemaechi Dele.

Other members of the committee include Hon. Johnson Iheonukara Duru – Ideato South, Hon. Frank Ugboma – Oguta, and Hon. Emeka Nduka – Ehime Mbano

Recall that IMHA on December 24, 2021, suspended three members of the Assembly and declared the seat of the Ngor Okpala member vacant.

Moving a motion for the recall, the House Majority Leader, Hon. Onyemaechi Dele, recalled that the members were suspended for 18 months during plenary.

The Imo House of Assembly also amended House rules, giving opportunity for a newly elected member to emerge as Speaker, the 10th Assembly.

Ruling, the Imo Speaker, Emeka Nduka, declared the suspension lifted and advised the affected members to resume sittings henceforth.
