There is uneasy calm at the Federal Government Girls College, Lejja, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State following an attack on a female student by yet to be identified hoodlum.
The student in Junior Secondary School, class 3, name (withheld) was said to have came out in the early hours of Saturday morning to ease herself when somebody emerged from nowhere, gripped her and showed a knife to hush her.
The assailant, it was gathered, started macheting the girl with a machete.
It was gathered that save for alarm raised by another student who emerged when she allegedly heard hushed voices the girl would have been kidnapped or killed.
It was gathered that the assailant bolted when the other student raised an alarm, leaving the girl in a pool of blood and was later rushed to the school clinic for medical attention.
Sources, told our correspondent on Sunday that fear has gripped the entire students and staff since the incident, wondering how could such a thing happened with the many internal security outfit guarding the school premises.
“I am afraid, we are afraid since the incident happened. We are afraid because the school is fenced round, so I wonder how the attacker gained entrance into the girls hostel.
“There is no police station nor police post in the school. Though there is internal security but I don’t think they are enough to secure the school,” one of the sources said.
A parent, who simply gave her name as Mrs Onyebuchi, told our correspondent that she visited the school on the last visiting day on Saturday, but parents were not allowed free access to their children like before which is an indication that fear has gripped the school over the unfortunate incident.
“Before the school authority allowed us to go close to the hostels but last Saturday was different. They will not allow parents to go near the hostels but rather asked students to come to the field and corners to receive their parents and guidance that came for visiting day.
“Some parents have decided that if this kind of treatment continues, they may not come for the visiting days again,” she disclosed.
However, the principal of the school, Mrs Charity Agede Ogar could not be reached for comment but the chairman Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Ejike Eya, denied any knowledge of the incident.
Efforts to get the reaction of the police failed as the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, didn’t answer his calls but simply said in text “sorry, I have a meeting now.”
