The embarrassment, tension and shame that comes with the criminal use of the name of her divorced husband, S. Usman, for 11 years has reached the brim. The legal risks -too-which trails the malicious and unwarranted use of the name has been avoided after Christy finally and shamelessly succumbed in the presence of overwhelming evidence of contempt to stop using her ex-husband’s name in court.
Prior the resolution, it was a thorny predicament to his family who genuinely holds legitimacy to the name of the man at the epicenter of the illegitimate claims by Christy (whose moral option now is to bear her biological father’s name: Yori).
Yesterday at the Magistrate Court, in Barnawa, Kaduna , Christy Yori made a pronouncement that she will decease from illegally and unjustifiably using the name of her estranged husband who, according to available record, had long divorced her through the court.
Henceforth, it is most responsible to say all correspondence, documents and her future dealings will be addressed to Christy D. Yori and not Christy Saleh Usman as she was previously called. After all, things have fallen apart and the center cannot hold, Christy has finally bitten the humble pie and disgracefully compelled to take the honourable path to drop the name: Usman.
At the Court premises yesterday when hearing into the matter was going on, a woman outside the court room made a passing remark that sent people laughing. She said: “Christy should have gone back and reconciled with her real husband, Emmanuel Zira, who hails from Adamawa State than sticking to her gun in a wild-goose-chase. That’s, if she needs a man to bear his name by all means to prop up her politics.”
Violating an earlier judgment of High Court and criminally bearing the name of Usman, against his wish, in a disgusting manner, has been most embarrassing in the past 11 years.
Like any morally sane person will curiously ask Christy, why did you wait this long to give peace a chance? Why did you allow your issues to pull through the public before succumbing to pressure? Like Caesar’s wife she would have lived above board and stayed clear of Usman’s name immediately after the divorce in 2010.
Why the use of Usman’s name is considered a criminal act? Hon. Justice Zailani of the Kaduna State High-Court nullified the marriage on 20th April, 2010 on the grounds that it was contracted during the subsistence of a valid marriage under the Matrimonial Causes Act .And after the nullification of the marriage, Christy would have ceased from using the name of Usman (as expected). She didn’t rather criminally continued using same despite several repeated pleas and warnings and refused to comply at the chagrin and dismay of Usman and his family.
Responding to the irrational use of Usman’s name by Christy, Counsel to the complainants, Adams Nathan (Esq) approached the court for the second time, after the marriage was nullified by the court. In a document available to us, it indicates that, “all efforts to make the defendant to see reason not to use the names of the complainant fell on deaf ears, despite writing a warning letter. Whereof the act of the defendant (Christy) constitute the offences of impersonation, furnishing false information to the public, impersonation of persons name in certificate, using evidence known to be false, false statement in declaration which the law receivable as false, contrary to Section 142,104,143,124 and 127 of the Kaduna State Panel CODE Law, 2017 respectively.”
Another document shows that Counsel to the complainant have served Christy a letter of complaint against the use of her former husband’s name. It reads:” The attention of our clients have being drawn to an APC Publication as JEMA’A DECIDES JOIN THE WINNING TEAM 2021, with your name as HON. CHRISTY USMAN. Your publication was conspicuously placed at the party’s office and locations in Kafanchan and also various platforms in the social media giving it the widely desired publicity to the detriments, embarrassment and humiliation of my clients. This is besides the provocative death burial programme of your father that our client name was mentioned as one of the INLAWS. It is on notice to the general public via Leadership Newspaper dated 7th May, 2010 and Daily Trust 12 May, 2010 that a judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Zailani dated 20th April, 2010 has nullified the marriage contracted between S. Usman and Christy D. Yori.”
However, even with the divorce, as a politician, she curried favour and made political capital out of the hard earned reputation of her estranged husband.
Meanwhile, at the Court hearing on 23rd September, 2021 Christy presented a copy of a court affidavit, which she obtained from the Kaduna High-Court in a move to change her name and also told the court that she had placed an advertorial for change of name in one of the nation’s newspapers. It is expected that proof of compliance must be filed in court before next adjourned date so that the case will be finally determined by the Court.
