The Ogoni Community Development Network (OCDN) has taken a decision to mobilize Ogoni people against Senator Barry Mpigi over reports of violence against Ogoni citizens linked to him. This decision was taken yesterday at the executive meeting of OCDN in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

OCDN took the decision to stage this protest against Senator Mpigi following credible reports linking him to the recent embarrassment, arrest and torture of the President of MOSOP in the hands of Nigerian security forces in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The MOSOP President was on his way to Port Harcourt according to accounts by Sahara Reporters on January 2, just two days to the annual Ogoni day event when he was accosted, roughly handled and whisked away by security men attached to the Inspector General of Police Special Tactical Squad in Port Harcourt.. OCDN warn that never again shall Mpigi’s madness and rascality be allowed to threaten the peace of Ogoni without an appropriate action to expose his untamed character.

Senator Barry Mpigi’s sponsorship of divisions in Ogoniland at a time Ogoni was beginning to witness some calm and return to normal community life was very disturbing and should not be tolerated..

OCDN further notes that Senator Barry Mpigi’s conduct especially as the key mastermind of the detention and torture of the president of MOSOP on January 2 were calculated to cause crises in Ogoni and a public protest against Senator Mpigi at the National Assembly will become necessary to expose the unpleasant activities of the senator in Ogoni.

We are further informed that the senator is doing all these to control the apex Ogoni group with a view to win their endorsement ahead of the 2023 governorship race. We will advice the senator, however, to conduct himself more appropriately or shelve his governorship ambition.

The OCDN urges the Ogoni people to be prepared to take every steps necessary to put senator Mpigi to check including a possible recall and public protests at the National Assembly.

Signed:

Johnson Kuele
