The leadership of the United Progressive Party (UPP) commends the military high command for listening to the party, leading to the release of victims of the tricycle operators arrested in their unfortunate clash with some soldiers in Umuahia, Abia state capital on Tuesday.
Recall that when the UPP received information on the clash, our great party immediately issued a statement calling on the military to straightway institute an investigation into the cause to ascertain the true position of the matter as well as the whereabouts of the victims.
Our position was based on the fact that there were conflicting reports on the issue and the fact that such issues, if not well-managed are capable of sending the wrong signal and worsen the situation in the region.
We are therefore happy that the military high command in response waded into the matter leading to the release of the tricycle operators. In this regard, we are confident that the military would do the needful in getting to the root of the matter and putting necessary measures to avoid such clashes in the future.
This is against the backdrop of our earlier call on the Federal Government to do all to douse the tension in the region, especially with the recent heavy deployment of security personnel in the area, a development that has heightened fears in the region. UPP as a responsible party, committed to the welfare of all Nigerians irrespective of political, ethnic or religious affiliations believes that the sense of safety of all citizens must be guaranteed at all times.
On that note we once again call on all our members in the South East, especially those in Anambra to remain focused and continue to work hard in mobilizing for the November 18, 2017 Anambra governorship election, where, without doubt our candidate, Chief Osita Chidoka, and our party, with its symbol of the fearless tiger, have since received the endorsement of the people.
