The race to November 18, 2017 Anambra gubernatorial elections may have tightened. This is following the entry of more credible personalities into the gubernatorial contest. Recently, Chudi Offodile, a one-time member of the House of Representatives who hails from the State Capital, Awka, officially declared his aspiration to vie for the gubernatorial contest under the party banner of the United Progressive Party [UPP].

Chudi Offodile, while making his intentions to join the gubernatorial contest public, began his brief introduction with “blessed are those who are proud to be called Biafrans” – as he explained why he considers his entry into the race a necessity at the present time in Anambra State. He pointed to the Biafran ideology as his promise to the people of Anambra and of the south east. “We are Igbos and cannot shy away from being Igbo. Biafra is a part of our history and we can never erase it.” He continued that “Igbos must move forward to demand better leadership from her political leaders and representatives“.
The ongoing resurgence of the Biafran ideology within the south east and the diaspora appear to have led to increased membership into the widely considered Biafra party, the UPP. New age politicians who align themselves with the ideology of Biafra have found themselves joining the UPP in large numbers. Some of the reasons for the increased registration into the party is believed to have to do with the injustice meted to non violent protesters in Onitsha and Nkpor and other cities of the south east. The brutal killings in the hands of the federal troops stationed in the south east occurred without condemnation from the seating south east governors and Representatives at the National Assembly.
Already, up to 80% of the present national executives of the UPP comprise of disaffected members of the All Progressive Grand Alliance [APGA] who deserted the APGA because APGA lost its original focus.
