The increasing noise decibel over the agitation for an independent Biafra by the Indigenous People of Biafra [IPOB] may have over poured into unexpected areas of the Nigerian polity, as the gubernatorial election in Anambra nears and the aspirants of the UPP augur to clinch the party’s gubernatorial ticket under the platform of Biafra ideology, the can-do spirit.
For this reason, according to information available to 247ureports.com, the Department of Security Services [DSS] has opened investigation into the activities of the UPP and its gubernatorial candidates. The UPP is believed to have the sympathetic follower-ship of IPOB members and the general Biafra agitators.
As gathered through a top level and competent source within the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC], agents of the DSS had visited the Abuja offices of the INEC demanding for the registration documents of the UPP domiciled at the INEC archives. The source noted that the INEC were not immediately able to release the requested documents to the agents of the DSS. “We could not find the documents”. The source indicated that they had to reach out to the UPP secretariat for extra copies of the registration documents. “The UPP were cooperative to send us the documents without asking too many questions”.
According to the source, the DSS agents had wanted the registration documents as part of their investigation into the mode of operation of the UPP. “The DSS agents were searching for the word Biafra in the UPP manifesto”. The source explained that the DSS agents carted away with the said documents to their offices for finer scrutiny.
The results of the DSS’ examination of the documents is not available to 247ureports.com but the source explains that the DSS became interested in the UPP link to the secessionist movement following a publication by this news outfit pointing to the UPP as the Biafra party. The source revealed that the DSS agent had contacted the leaders of the UPP party inquiring whether the UPP was truly a Biafra party. One of the leader of the party who actually visited the DSS open invitation told the DSS that the party was formed on the manifesto of fighting for justice and for equality and not for secession. He also impressed on the DSS that the party also stands for the Biafra ideology, [the can-do spirit].
The DSS agents who conducted the ‘interview’ threatened to continue monitoring the activities of the party, indicating that he suspects the party was hatched to breed the Biafra sentiments among a segment of the population.
In talking with the major stakeholders of the party, it was confirmed that DSS agents had expressed interest in talking with the leadership of the party regarding its close affiliation with the Biafra movement. One of the leaders revealed that the DSS agents had in fact began active surveillance of the group’s activities – particularly as it prepares for its convention on Thursday June 28, 2017 in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
The two leading gubernatorial aspirants, Hon. Chudi Offodile and Hon. Osita Chidoka have both expressed that the UPP agenda is not secession from Nigeria nor about Biafra. Hon. Offodile told 247ureports.com that his campaign is about the Biafra ideology while Hon. Chidoka indicated that his campaign is about better and revolutionized government for all people both the poor and the rich.
