Communication mast and properties worth millions of Naira, at the Police Area Command in Aba, Abia State, have been destroyed by torrential rains which hit the city.
The rain which lasted half an hour destroyed the mast and roof of a twin two storey Police staff quarters in the barracks which was recently renovated.
While no life was lost, the impact of the mast caused a part of the storey building to collapse. It was also gathered that the base communication station of the command was heavily damaged by the storm.
A police source who declined to have his name on print told Vanguard that “while no life was lost, but we can’t communicate to our patrol teams using the walkie talkie because of the damage.
“It is unfortunate that the incident has affected our operating equipment and staff quarters. We hope that the governor; Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and the State Command including other concerned individuals will come to our aids.
“The damage is too much for us to bear and the roofs needed to be fixed immediately as we are entering the rainy season and the personnel living in the affected flats should have a room where their families can lay their heads.”
Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) Abia State Police Command, DSP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said that the Police have started addressing the situation.
