It is becoming obvious that President Muhammadu Buhari may be unaware of the cries of anguish and frustration of Nigerians, who are daily, tormented by unemployment, poverty, hunger, disease, malnutrition, epileptic power supply, inflation, armed robbery, kidnapping, and decaying infrastructure or he may have chosen to ignore the pitiful plight of the millions of Nigerians whose goodwill finally brought him into power after a couple of failed attempts. For me, the energy of this administration and the resources of this country should be channeled and devoted to a war against these challenges. The war of our highly experienced president should shift to how to battle frightening famine and ravaging poverty in our land. An average Nigerian is struggling to get just one meal per day. Nigerians are in economic crisis, struggling to survive. What is the business of a man who is struggling to feed with the alleged forgery in the Senate or war against corruption? Our highly experienced President should wage war against hunger and those things hindering better living for the masses of this country and impact on the lives of the people by waging war against the real challenges facing us.

Currently, Kerosene, the cooking fuel of the masses of this country is being sold for between N200 and N300 per litre. This is the same product which sold for an average of N110 per litre just a year ago. Officially, kerosene is supposed to sell at N83 per litre. Nigerians are now left to wonder what impact the war against corruption has made on the price of kerosene; wouldn’t it make more sense if Mr President also wage war against the skyrocketing price of kerosene? Mr. President should wage war against the rising prices of food stuffs as matter of priority. Since inception of the present administration the price of a bag of garri has almost quadrupled. It’s becoming increasingly hard and difficult for the masses of this country to be able to afford staple food like rice, corn, yam, beans, semovita, wheat, bread. Not to mention the high cost of treatment and drugs which has multiplied in hospitals beyond the affordability of the increasing poor population.
It is glaring that more than a year electioneering, President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC are still very busy playing politics. To say that about 90% of the attention of the present government is on the politics of is to merely admit the obvious. This is evident in the desperation to decimate the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu. To the detriment and total neglect to the wellbeing of Nigerians, excessive attention is being given to the anti-corruption war and the politics of destroying opposition figures instead of concentrating on governance and the worsening economic challenges. It is unclear to Nigerians how the alleged forgery allegation in the Senate will put food on their table or reduce the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities or how the skewed war against corruption will reduce the cost of living in Nigeria. The conditions of the poor masses have been worsen and aggravated by the war against corruption of this administration.
Rising unemployment is no doubt contributing to the famine in our nation. Manufacturers and other businesses are struggling to survive in the face of warped and staggering economic policies of the present government. Industrial capacity utilization is hovering around a startling 10%. As a result, millions of Nigerians have been thrown out of jobs. Our youth are roaming the streets in search of jobs. Consequently, crime is on the rise, with some of the unemployed youth embracing criminalities. Armed robbery and kidnapping have suddenly assumed an unprecedented dimension even across the hitherto peaceful states of this country.
Our dear president should as matter of urgency and policy begin a rigorous fight against hunger, side by side with the ongoing war against corruption. A Yoruba proverb says “when hunger is dealt with, poverty is defeated” the present administrations fight against corruption will amount to nothing and wouldn’t be appreciated by Nigerians if hunger and extreme poverty continues to ravage our land. A simultaneous war on corruption and hunger is what can restore our hope and faith in this government. Time for Mr. President and the APC to put on their thinking caps and get their priorities right is now, before hunger and poverty kills us all.
