A Human Rights Group led by Barr. Emmanuel Obakpolor, has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the Security operatives in Benin Zonal Command over the dastard acts of some military personnel attached to a patrol team in Delta State.
In the petition, a copy of which was obtained by 247ureports.com, Obakpolor said the soldiers, operating with a Hilux Pickup Van with registration NO DT JUL 023, had molested, assaulted and grossly violated the fundamental human rights of dwellers in Ogharefe, the administrative headquarters of Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.
In the petition dated 17th December 2015, Obakpolor specifically accused the soldiers of intimidating a fast food operator in the area, despite possessing an operational license with the registered name ‘Lady Warm Up Restaurant and Bar’ and Business No 23570990 obtained from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Obakpolor said his client has been in operation for over 15 years without any criminal record or involvement in acts that undermine the establishment of the force, hence the appeal to relevant authorities to call the soldiers to order to avoid the breakdown of law and order in the area.
The petitioner decried the action of the soldiers who invaded the food centre with troops led by one Captain Ezekiel Wakili from an oil firm, Pan Ocean, which stormed his client’s business premises, beat up its customers, leaving an order that customers should stop patronizing the outfit forthwith.
He alleged that the soldiers on July 19, 2015 invaded the premises, shot sporadically into the air, sent shivers down the spine of customers, arrested some and held them captive for five days before releasing them with the instruction “don’t go to Lady Warm Up Fast Food again”.
Barrister Obakpolor, explained that on December 6, another set of soldiers stormed the premises with an army coloured Hilux Vehicle bearing the inscription on both sides DT JUL 023 where the soldiers also manhandled his client’s customers, revealing that the soldiers had vowed to disrupt every move to make the centre functional in Ogharefe.
Obakpolor maintained that the “constitutional function of the Armed Forces is to protect the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Nigeria from external aggression, and not to intimidate, harass and assault innocent citizens who go about their legitimate business in a lawful manner”.
