The Abia State Police Command has said that it is awaiting reports from ballistics experts to conclude investigations into the alleged killing of shoemakers at the Ariaria International market, Aba, during a raid by men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

Recall that NDLEA operatives stormed an illicit drug spot popularly known as “Black Kingdom” on July 31, to arrest a suspected baron but were alleged to have shot shoemakers, leaving about three persons dead.

Though Police sources told 247ureports.com that the deceased persons have been buried, the State Police Command said that they were however yet to conclude investigations in the matter as they are still awaiting the result from ballistics experts to determine the particular security agency using the bullet(s) used in the shootings.

It was also gathered that NDLEA officials who were earlier arrested in connection to the shootings have been granted bail, pending the outcome of a full investigation into the matter.

A security official in the state who declined to have his name on print disclosed that a comprehensive investigation into the killings became necessary following disagreements over which security agency was responsible for the type of bullet recovered from the Ariaria shooting scene.

The traders accused NDLEA officials of shooting of their colleagues, but the Abia State NDLEA Commander, Dele Akingbade, denied the  allegation, leading to a comprehensive investigation to determine whether the bullets belonged to NDLEA, Police or soldiers who were called to quell the riot.

According to the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ezekiel Onyeke said, “The bullets found at the scene of the incident have been forwarded to ballistics experts for examination and proper analysis but we are yet to get their report. We are awaiting their report which will bring the investigation to a logical conclusion and make it available for the next line of action.”

Our correspondent also gathered that NDLEA officers who were earlier detained for questioning over their involved in the shooting which led to the killings have been granted bail.

“Abia State NDLEA Commander, Mr. Bamidele Akingbade took all of them on bail. The body of one of the victims has also been released to his people for burial,” a source hinted.
