The Imo State Police command has arrested six members of the Movement for the
Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) for allegedly causing breach of peace, disturbance and hoisting unauthorised flags in
The MASSOB members were last weekend engaged in a confrontation with the police at the Assumpta roundabout in Owerri, the state capital, while riding in a motorcade to the heart of the state capital in commemoration of the MASSOB Day celebration, during which they were tear-gased by the police.
Speaking at a press conference in Owerri yesterday, the state commissioner of police, Mr. Austin Evbakhavbokun said the group members were arrested because they stormed Owerri without previous notice to the police command and that they were clad in MASSOB/Biafra uniforms.
He added that the pro-Biafran group bore Biafra flags and marched towards the Owerri/Port Harcourt federal highway, chanting war songs in such a tumultuous manner as to cause breach of the peace.
Evbakhavbokun disclosed that the out of the 68 members of MASSOB arrested by the police, 62 had been charged to court on Monday for conspiracy, belonging to unlawful society and conduct likely to cause breach of the peace.
