Press Statement

The Peoples Democratic Party, Rivers State has said the Nigeria Police acted overzealously by imposing a curfew in the State on account of the illegal Local Government Election that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Rivers State is purportedly conducting.

State PDP Chairman Bro Felix Obuah in a Press Statement issued by his Media Adviser Jerry Needam said the Police cannot be crying more than the bereaved as there is no security threat or any breach of public order that will justify the imposition of a curfew in Rivers State at this time.

The PDP noted that even during the last general elections with heightened competition and tension at that time, the Police did not impose a curfew, wondering why the curfew at a more robust peace period and coming at a time the court stripped the election of legitimacy.

“It amounts to double standards for the Police to aid illegality because they are a defendant as well as the INEC in the suit where the Federal High Court Judge ordered parties to maintain status quo regarding release of voter registers. To conduct an election without the voters register, the main ingredient of legitimacy in the election, is a slap to the court. The police should be law enforcers and not law breakers”, the statement added.

“The so called Local Government Election by Governor’s Amaechi’s Government and APC is illegal and shall remain so. The PDP will not accord it any recognition as it deserves none. The APC cannot build something on nothing and expect it to stand”, the statement further added said.

In the face of this illegality, the PDP calls on her numerous supporters and the Rivers State voters to remain calm and accord no regard to the illegal contraption called Local Government Election in the State as nothing will come out of the entire  exercise at the end of the day.
