A socio political pressure group under the auspices of Conference of Minority Tribes in Nigeria has reminded the President-elect Gen. Mohammadu Buhari of his campaign promise of corruption free administration.
The group wants Buhari and his Party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), to fulfill the first stage of their campaign promise by ensuring that a corrupt free Senator emerged as the senate President of the 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Okpokwu Ogenyi emphasized on the anti-corruption campaign strategy embarked upon during the electioneering campaign that led APC to nationwide victory.
Okpokwu said, “As it stands today, most of the former Governors turn Senators has series of financial charges against then either by the EFCC, ICPC, Police special fraud unit etc. Some are of less political value to the change Party hence the search for the Senate Presidency has become necessary”.
“Our search inconjuction with Journalists have found a worthy servant of the Federal Republic of Nigeria whose antecedents proves that his leadership qualities are second to none in the Senate, couple with his clean record of a corrupt free Nigerian”.
“We sincerely appeal to Distinguished Senators elect and the governing Party to unanimously endorse Distinguished Sen. Dr. George Akume, the present Senate Minority Leader as the Senate President of the 8th Senate. This is because Akume is the only former governor as a Senator who has no corruption charges against him either by EFCC, ICPC, Police special fraud unit and the court of public opinion”.
The conference also observed that, as a third term senator, Akume is the most ranking Senator from the North Central Nigeria. “The most effective Senate Minority Leader whose leadership catapulted from minority into governing Party. He is reliable, dependable and accountable. We advise President Buhari and his Party to end the search for Senate Leadership hence there can be no better candidate than Sen. George Akume”.
Describing the former Benue State governor, the group says Senator Akume is the highest ranking Senator from the North Central geo-political zone and also the Senate Minority Leader which has stand him tall among other legible contenders.
According to him, “Akume is a stabilizer of the nation’s democracy. His experience has advanced democracy and we can see its manifestation in his leadership as a minority leader in the Senate and his role in APC becoming the majority party in Nigeria” “Senator George Akume is a third-term senator, who has distinguished himself and till date has no fraudulent charges against him. He is a detribalized with impeccable track records and antecedents”. “We are confident that he will lead the country’s upper legislative chamber successfully as the president”.
