This was even as he announced the decision of the PDP leaders in the state to throw their support behind Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to emerge as the PDP flab bearer in Monday’s gubernatorial primaries.
The Returning Officer for Enugu West Senatorial District primary election, Mr. Innocent Agbo, declared Senator Ekweremadu after affirmative votes by delegates at Awgu Local Government where many PDP faithful had converged to witness the exercise.
Announcing the result, Agbo said: “I want to thank people of Enugu West for the orderly conduct of the primary election. Total delegates for Enugu West Senatorial District is 315.  But we had 299 accredited delegates.  Senator Ike Ekweremadu scored 294 votes.  We had 5 invalid votes.
“I Innocent Agbo, by the powers conferred on me as the Returning Officer of this nomination election for Enugu West Senatorial District do hereby declare Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the winner of the PDP primary election for Enugu West Senatorial District.”
In his acceptance speech, an elated Senator Ekweremadu announced that leaders of the party had resolved to back Hon. Ugwuanyi from Enugu North senatorial zone as the governorship candidate of the party in the state in line with their desire to ensure peace and justice for all the people of the state.
He thanked the Almighty God for giving him another opportunity to aspire to represent his people at the senate and dedicated his victory to God and Governor Sullivan Chime whom he described as his friend and brother.
Senator Ekweremadu applauded one of the governorship aspirants from his senatorial zone, Chief Anayo Onwuegbu for accepting to drop his ambition to ensure peace in the state saying his sacrifice was highly appreciated.
He said: “It is with a heart full of joy and gratitude to Almighty God that I make this few remarks this afternoon. Let me thank my colleagues from the National Assembly, men of God, and all those who struggled to get us to where we are today.
“I have run several elections in the past, but this is the first time I am being returned unopposed in spite of all the challenges.  Therefore there is God in heaven. We have God who acts when everything seems impossible and he has shown that He is a true God and He will answer you when you call Him.
“I will like to dedicate this victory we have achieved today to God and my friend and my brother, the Governor of Enugu State. The  governor is our friend and our brother.  He has done well as a governor.
“It pained me when Satan and temptation came between us.  We thank God we were able to resolve our differences. We started so well and by the grace of God we are going to end very well.
“I would like to thank our brother, Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu who is also from Enugu West like the Governor.  He is indeed a gentle man, because we are making peace in Enugu State and we want peace in Enugu State, he too like the governor has decided to sacrifice his gubernatorial ambition so that we can have peace in Enugu State. . I will have to confess that we have both the delegates and the strength to deliver Onwuegbu as the governor, but because we want equity in our state, because we want justice and peace in our state, everybody is making sacrifices.
“So tomorrow we will go to Enugu and elect Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as our governorship candidate.  Before this time tomorrow, by God’s grace, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi would be the flag bearer of PDP in Enugu State.”
Senator Ekweremadu who described his reelection to fly the PDP flag in next year election as a source of inspiration, said he felt refueled noting that “by the time we take off this time, the sky will be our limit.”
He added: “Over the last 12 years we have tried to provide infrastructure for our people.  We have done roads, quality roads some of the best in this country.  We brought water to our people; we have also done hospital projects; we have given scholarships; we have also given bursary; we have trained our women in various trades; now is the time for us to ensure that we provide jobs for our young men and women.
“We have also brought an Open University here at Awgu and I also want to promise as I said that day, before this time next year, we are going to bring a Federal Polytechnic to this zone.  So, the next thing is to provide industries to our people and we are going to do that.
“We are going to focus on industries.  We are going to train our young men and women at the five National Youth Development Centres we have created. This is the only senatorial zone in the country where you have such centres in all the LGAs. Already, I am talking with Italians. They were in Udi two days ago to inspect the one at Udi, and they are going to do the same in the other four centres.
“They are going to bring their experts to train our people in different skills so that they can be gainfully employed and employ others.”
Handing over the official result sheet of the election to Senator Ekweremadu, Senator Anthony Manzo, Chairman of the National Assembly Electoral Committee for Enugu State, congratulated him and urged him to work hard to win the seat for the party so as to continue with his good representation of the zone.
Meanwhile, Hon. Chinedu onu who is from Enugu North senatorial zone who came to solidarise with Senator Ekweremadu at the Awgu venue used the opportunity to announce his withdrawal from the race.
