The Anambra state command of the Nigeria Police Force has expressed its commitment to protect the commercial navel city of Onitsha at all cost because of its economic strategic importance,.
The Onitsha Area Commander of the force, Mr. Benjamin Wordu (AC) stated this yesterday while playing host to the Anambra state chapter of the Community Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria, CONPAN, pointing out that the commercial town must be kept in peace and stability so that people can be free to carry out their legitimate business.
Mr. Wordu stated it that any flourishing economic town all over the world normally attract men of the under world because of the feeling that they can make quick money from such economic viable centres.
“It is generally believed that an average Igboman is a trader and interestingly, Onitsha is the sacred commercial centre for Nigeria, which automatically makes it look lucrative for criminals” Mr. Wordu stated
He however called on all everybody in the state to always make useful information available to the police so that hoodlums can quickly be apprehended before they deal a blow to the society.
“These criminals don’t live in the air, they reside among the people and it is incumbent on every one to expose them whenever they notice a suspicious movement in their neighbourhood.” The police boss appealed
Mr. Wordu said emphatically that the police would not relent in its war against the men of the underworld until the community city is free from the terrible activities of thr bandits, which according to him is capable of sending investors away.
Earlier in his speech, the coordinator of the Community Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria, CONPAN, Anambra State chapter, Hon. Tempest Udeze commended the Area Commander for his effort at sanitizing Onitsha most especially the notorious Upper Iweka, which was a nightmare to the residents and visitors to Onitsha.
Hon. Udeze however called for a more harmonious working relationship with his members and the police in the state who are covering the nooks and crannies of the state, pointing out that over four hundred newspapers are registered with the CONPAN nation wide.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Central Police Station, Mr. Fashugba Temitope (SP) and other senior police officer flanked the Onitsha Area Commander during the visit.
