The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Abia State chapter has called on the federal government to address the incessant killing of defenceless women and children in the North East region of Nigeria.

The chairperson of the group, Mrs Beatrice Okezie who stated this in an interview with newsmen in Aba while condemning the recent abduction of female students of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.

Okezie said that issues surrounding the abduction of the girls by the Boko Haram sect have gone beyond political reasons.

“We condemn in its entirety, the abduction of the Chibok female students by the Boko Haram sect. I don’t know the idea behind the kidnapping of the female students, whether they are going to abuse them or what. Only God knows their motives. Initially, they said that the group’s actions were politically sponsored. Those children are not politicians for us to say that their kidnapping were politically motivated. All we are saying is that NAWOJ is against the kidnapping of the children especially women, because they are always the vulnerable and victims of such attacks.

“We are also calling on the federal government to step in to and find a solution to that problem. Kidnapping innocent children has now become the order of the day in this part of the country. Whatever that might be the problem should be sorted out.

She called on Nigerians to get closer to God in prayers as it is the only option to ending Boko Haram onslaught on the nation.

“The possible solution is for us to pray so that God will touch those people behind all these killings in Nigeria. We are one Nigeria and we need peace, joy and love. We don’t have any other country apart from this. So, whether we believe it or like it or not, it is our country. But what I will just say is, let us continue to pray that one day God will touch them. Let everybody come out, even in our individual homes, churches, mosques lets pray for peace to reign in this country.”

While commending efforts of the federal government in tackling insecurity in the country, she called on the citizenry to be security conscious and always report suspicious movement around to the security agencies, stressing that government alone cannot tackle insecurity in the country without the support of the citizenry.
