Information Minister Mr. Labaran Maku has appealed to the Eggon ethnic group in Nasarawa State to genuinely pursue the course of peaceful co-existence with other tribes in the state. He made the appeal in Abuja at the inauguration of the executive committee of the Eggon Youth Movement, Abuja Chapter.

He said the youth in particular should embrace peace for development to take place in their community.

“Let me sincerely advise that we should be modest in our speeches; we should be generous in spirit; we should be friendly to all; we should seek peace and pursue peace sincerely from our hearts.  We must acknowledge that violence does not do good to anyone.  It destroys, it does not build.  We must put the fear of God in all we do. And fear of God means that you must be patient with life; you must pursue peace within yourself, with your community and neighbours  and you must do everything possible to ensure we all contribute our quota to the development of our community, development of Nasarawa State and development of Nigeria,” he said.

Mr. Maku stated that recent survey indicated that development had been retarded in crisis-prone areas and admonished the people never to allow the repeat of the cycle of violence in Nasarawa State. “What we saw in our state in recent times was too ugly; it was something that all of us must resolve never again that our state will be in the state of chaos and destruction,” the Minister remarked.

Mr. Maku advised the people to champion their aspirations through peaceful means and the belief in God and said “even when you feel cheated sometimes, and in life there are times that you get cheated, even in the family, there are times that certain things that you believe are your own may not come to you.  The only way to get it back is to go closer to God.  Continue pursuing your effort; continue relying on God; have a sincere heart and clean mind then gradually God will turn the table in your favour.”

Speaking on politics, the Information Minister enjoined the people of Nasarawa State to stand up in support of President Goodluck Jonathan to reciprocate his gesture in executing various laudable projects in the state.

He mentioned some of the projects to include the siting of a federal university in Lafia, construction of Lafia-Awe-Obi road, construction of Lafia-Doma road, construction of the Oweto Bridge and provision of Information and Communication Technology facilities to secondary schools in the state.

“We want to assure you that at the federal level a lot of development is taking place.  So as we work towards 2015, I am urging the people of Nasarawa State and particularly this community to stand by the President because he has shown commitment to our development.  There should be no shaking at all and we have to be bold in that support,” he said.

In a message to the occasion, former Minister of Information Professor Jerry Gana, who was represented by Dr. John Dara called on the people of the Middle Belt to take their rightful place in the affairs of the nation by championing the course of peace and nation-building.

In his remarks, the President of Eggon Cultural Development Association, Dr. Chris Mamman, denounced insinuations that the Eggon ethnic group is synonymous with violence and said they are ready to expose anyone who promotes violence.
