The South East Zonal
Coordinator of Women for Change and Development
Initiative, Dr. Mrs. Gloria Chukwukere has described Enugu
as the most gender friendly states in the zone.
Speaking when she paid a courtesy visit on the Governor of the State,Mr. Sullivan Chime at the Government House, Enugu, Dr. Mrs.
Chukwukere also praised him for the various developmental
projects and programmes put in place to better the lots of
women in the state.
She specifically mentioned his appointment of many women in
various
key positions in the state and the introduction of free
maternal and child health care programme in all government
owned health institutions in the state.
Dr. Mrs. Chukwukere recalled when she was a lecturer at the
Institute
of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu some eighteen
years ago and observed with satisfaction that the state had
been greatly transformed and thanked the Governor for his
good works to move the state forward and make life better
for the people.
She told the Governor that she was in the state as part of
her
sensitization tour of the zone to meet with the women, interact with
them and to discuss their problems, projects and programmes
in
readiness to their future endeavours.
The South East Zonal Coordinator stated that the First Lady
Dame
Patience Jonathan, the founder and initiator of the
programme has the
interest of the Nigerian women at heart, adding that
although the body
is nonpolitical non-religion and non-patrician it has a lot
of
interest in the affairs of the women and Nigerians in
general.
She called on the women to use their numbers and work
towards
attracting more appointment and electoral positions to themselves come
2015 and contributes their quota in the fight against the
current
insecurity challenges in the country.
Earlier in his speech, the Governor Mr. Chime pledged the
commitment
of his administration to the success of the programme and
projects of
the women organization in the state.
Governor Chime who was represented by the Chief of Staff,
Government
House, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo commended the initiator of the
programme
and the First Lady, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dame
Patience
Jonathan for her good work and record of achievements in
the welfare
and promotion of the living standard of women in the
country.
The Governor reassured that his administration would ensure
that women
in the state gets their fair share in the scheme of things,
especially
in political appointment and other social service.
He therefore commended all the officials of (W4C and DI)
Women for
Change and Development Initiative especially the State
Coordinator,
State Zonal Leaders as well as local government
coordinators and ward
supervisors for their good works in translating the
programmes and
activities of the body down to the grassroots.
