Enugu Gets Emergency Call Centre/Number

The Enugu State government has established an emergency call centre with its own number to complement its efforts to entrench security and enhance prompt medical attention to life-threatening emergencies in the state.
Governor Sullivan Chime, who announced this while presenting the 2014 budget estimate to the State House of Assembly, said the emergency Response Call Number listed as 117, will serve as an emergency centre which citizens can contact for swift responses during emergencies such as vehicle accidents, fire incidents and criminal activities
He said the centre will also serve as a direct link between the citizens of the state and the government making it possible for the citizens to interface and interact with the government at all times.
Governor Chime further said that the latest batch of security vehicles donated to the Nigerian Police and the ambulances of the Enugu State Medical Emergency Response Team (ESMERT), have all been tracked and connected to the emergency response call system.
He also disclosed that with the introduction of free basic education policy which covers children in primary and post-primary schools up to Junior Secondary School (JSS) 111, the school enrolment rate in pre-primary and primary schools rose from 65% to 85% between 2012 and 2013. The Governor said this had drastically reduced the number of out-of-school children in the state.
He said that the gains from the  reforms in the education sub sector was evidenced in the results of the 203 Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations where 50.10 per cent of the candidates from Enugu State passed with a minimum of five credits including English and Mathematics as opposed to 31.16 per cent in 2012.
On the welfare of workers, Governor Chime said that the government has developed and allotted 268 units of houses to civil servants in the state while meeting the draw-down conditions of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria for the release of funds for the development of 273 units of houses at the Estate in Ibeagwa Nike.
He further disclosed that only 37 out of the 472 communities in the state are yet to have electricity but assured that the affected communities will be connected to the national grid next year.
