Wild celebrations prevailed in Enugu State yesterday as results released by the State Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) of Saturday’s local Government Elections showed a hundred per cent victory for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in both the 17 Chairmanship and 260 councilorship positions.
Hundreds of supporters of the victorious candidates who had waited anxiously for the announcement of the results took the streets in celebration shortly after ENSIEC Chairman, Dr Boniface Eneh performed the function at the Commission’s headquarters in Enugu.
Dr Eneh stated that all the Chairmanship candidates of the PDP were returned unopposed while the party recorded resounding victories in the Counillorship positions contested for by opposition parties in five local government areas.
The elected chairmen of local government councils include Nwobodo Christian (Aninri), Matnanus Nze (Awgu), Prince Collins Nnaji (Enugu East), Victor Agbo ( Enugu South), Emeka Ozoagu (Ezeagu), Festus Ogbonna( Igboetiti) ,Bonaventure Onuh (Igboeze North), Ogbo Anugu Obom (Igboeze South) Nnamani N. (IsiUzo) and Sam Iyiogwe ( Nkanu East). Others are Afam Okereke (Nkanu West), Charles Ugwu (Nsukka), Onyemaechi Eke (OJi River). Amechi Nwodo (Udenu), Chinedu iloeje (Udi) and Cornel Onwubuya (Uzouwani).
The ENSIEC boss described the election as transparent and fair saying it has contributed to the growth of democracy in the state. He said the people were to be blamed for the comparatively poor turn out as electorsl materials were put in uplace at the various poling stations early enough.
Enugu State Governor Sullivan described the PDP sweep of the poll as a further testimony to the overwhelming acceptance of the party by the electorate in the state.
Chime who was speaking through his Chief Press Secretary said the party had secured the confidence of the people through the sincere and visible efforts of his administration to improve their lot since its inception in 2007.
